The museum houses the conventional historic artefacts of Otaru and is handily located near Asakusa Bridge and the cruise terminal. It is housed in a former warehouse and exhibits a plethora of objects that trace the history of Otaru from the Ainu period to the present. The majority of the exhibits include explanations in English, a real plus when viewing unknown artefacts and natural history items.

This museum is a refurnished Otaru warehouse built in the 1890s and shows a nice history of the settlement of Otaru and of Hokkaido in the 1800s, including a section on the tondenhei settlers who came in boats from Japan without knowing where they would settle in Hokkaido. There is a replica boat. Another display discusses the herring industry and Otaru’s rise as a financial center in northern Japan. The warehouse has orca fire protection tiles on its roof. Visited 9/11/2017.

Based on my pre-study of the recommended sightseeing routes, we first visited Otaru General Museum Unga-kan (Canal Museum). The museum occupies the northern section of a timber-framed stone storage building built in 1893 by a merchant from Ishikawa Prefecture used for storing grain and seafood. There are two exhibition rooms, the first focuses on the development of Otaru with displays related to the port and canals, herring fishing (some objects of which we had seen at The Historical Village of Hokkaido in Sapporo) and the trading between Hokkaido and mainland Honshuu. This was quite informative. The second focuses on nature and archaeology. There is a description outside that tells that the building complex that the museum is situated in is "One of the first commercial use warehouses built in the Ironai district immediately after the reclamation of the area. While the original construction consisted of the front right side of the building, further additions enclosed two courtyards to create a warehouse of truly grand proportions." The admission fee is 300yen and well worth it.

If you only have one chance to visit a museum in Otaru, this would be it. Quite informative, 45 mins max & 60mins if you can the Japanese description. Located right opposite the overrated Otaru Canal..

A small museum located right next to the canal. All exhibits are in Japanese, but guide sheets in several different languages including english and chinese are available.
The museum is relatively small with the entrance leading into the first section of the building. It has a description of the indigenous people of Hokkaido, history of the trading ships, the warehouses and the canal.
Visiting the museum doesn’t take much time and only costs 300¥ per person. On a hot day, other than an ice cream or coffee shop, it just might be a nice place to duck out of the sun for a while.
