The visitor centre has a cafe, gift shop and product store. The product store sells all Hokkaido made goods from sake to food stuffs and very interesting place to visit. The local crafts of glass ware were lovely as well.

I was there early in the morning before the shops opened at Unga Plaza but rather read the story of the dog statue and the firemen.

The tourist information is to be found in an historic building over the road from the canal and straight down from the train station, and is well worth a visit. It houses a nice gift shop, with a range of local souvenirs;a cafe serving delicious...More

The historical building itself is the Former Otaru Warehouse. Now functions as a tourist information center, providing sightseeing and accommodation information in Otaru. There are shops selling local food, products and souvenirs.

A small token fee brings you into this museum. A look back at olden day Otaru, its port, way of life and habitation. I must add that this was a more enjoyable and meaning visit than to the famed canal nearby.
