Accidentally passby this attraction. It is not open in the winter. It was about 45min drive from Niseko. Not a big place. Took a few shot before continue journey to Otaru. A good viewpoint that oversee Otaru. After this, the road is very windy towards Otaru.

Kenashi-yama Viewpoint is located half way to the top of Mt. Kenashi in the southern part of the city of Otaru. It took about 30 minutes by car from downtown Otaru with the GPS’s help. I’m not sure if we could make it without the GPS. We were lucky to drive to Kenashi-yama Viewpoint on a very sunny day. The view of the Bay of Ishikari and the city were quite good. We also had some views of mountains beyond the Bay of Ishikari. Kenashi-yama means “Mountain without hair.” Some information said one of the mountains one can see to the northeast from the viewpoint includes a mountain range called “Mashike-yama” or Hair-increasing Mountains. Very funny way of naming mountains in Hokkaido? Not really. They say “kenashi” is from the Ainu language that means ‘mountain.’ For this sound, the Japanese gave two kanji characters “ke” or hair and “nashi” or nothing. Besides the views, we could find Hokkaido Winery on the route to the viewpoint. It turned to be one of the most prominent wine makers in Japan with a generous wine tasting service.

At 467m, the elevation gives one a broad view over the city of Otaru. The ropeway to the top it's only takes about 5 mins ride. Beside the magnificent view of Otaru city... there is a Tengu Temple and Tengu Museum on the mountain. Tengu (天狗, "heavenly dog") are a type of legendary creature found in Japanese folk religion and are also considered a type of Shinto god (kami) or yōkai (supernatural beings). Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon (Tiangou), the Tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics. The earliest Tengu were pictured with beaks, but this feature has often been humanized as an unnaturally long nose, which today is widely considered the tengu's defining characteristic in the popular imagination.
