A stretch of path along the canal decorated by candle displays, ice sculptures and frozen flowers/leaves in the evening. The walk from the Otaru station takes about 10 minutes and there are two areas where you can enjoy the festival as well. The view of...More
The canals are worth a visit in concert with the main walking street.
Some of the beautiful warehouses have been converted to shops, restaurants and bars. It is a heavy tourist area so expect moderate quality at higher prices.

The Otaru Canal is a must place to visit. We have been spending our Christmas in Sapporo for the past 3 years but this is the first time that we went to Otaru Canal and we realized that we should have went here the first...More
Went there at the start of the otaru snow festival. Light up from 5pm. A short walk from otaru JR station, 30 minutes from Sapporo via JR lines. Nice scenary along the way. Lighting start qt the canal area.
I’m not sure what I expected from Otaru but it wasn’t the fantastic evening we had. It was a stop on our way to ski Niseko and the town and snow light festival is a beautiful, romantic and unique. Loved it. Can’t wait to come...More
This being our first stop in Hokkaido , was really excited about the evening walk by the canal and dinner.
Firstly most restaurants shut at 8pm so be prepared.
Second, we were here from 31Jan-1Feb, apart from lights we didn’t see any snow art.

If the rapid trains are running, the JR train from Sapporo to Otaru is only about 30minutes, hence plenty of time for day trip. However, if traveling during the winter season, please check train schedules as there were bad delays during heavy snow (took us over 2 hours one day).
The walk from the train station to Otaru Canal would be about 10-15mins at adults pace.
My view would be a day trip with Sapporo as base would be more than sufficient. Have fun!
Nearest ski resort with sled activities (2 Replies)
We are going Sapporro from 3-6 Dec and is planning a day trip to ski resort with sled activities for the kids. Where is the nearest ski resort from Sapporo station? Is JR ski resort near Otaru? Then I can combine sled and otaru canal on same day, would this be feasible? Thanks.

Consider Bankei and Moiwa ski resorts in Sapporo city. Your timeline is early in the season so better check status online or consult with TIC when you arrive.
8 Days in Hokkaido (8 Replies)
Hi all, I will be travelling to Hokkaido with my parents (age 60+) and daughter (age 4) from 15 to 22 August 2015. Reaching Chitose airport in the morning and departing from Chitose airport in the early afternoon. We will be driving a rental car throughout our stay. Can someone advise if the below itinerary is feasible, taking into consideration that I will be travelling with a young child and 2 elderly. Will it be too taxing? Thanks in advance! Day 1 Chitose – Noboribetsu –...More

The route looks fine, but only half a day for sightseeing in both Noboribetsu and Toya-ko seems a bit tight. Another thing to note is that by mid August both lavender and sunflower would have past their full bloom period. Lavender is best during July and sunflower early August.
An enjoyable trip in Hokkaido indeed ! :-) (11 Replies)
Dear Amanda and Nessie, I must thankyou both for all the tips and tricks you have given. My itinerary from Sapporo-Noboribetsu-Toya-Hakodate-Tokyo seemed to be working really well indeed! (from 6 Oct - 17 Oct total 12days) There's lots of ways to get around other than driving in HOkkaido but i personally think that if travelling in 4, perhaps its worth it to drive. otherwise, taking JR train and purchase them from tourist info centre is very very easy and cheaper than those...More
