My husband and I specifically went to visit the Otaru canal for the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival last February 2020. We took the JR Train from Sapporo station to Otaru Station. It took us almost an hour one way and the train was full both ways.
The long trip was worth it when we saw the lanterns light up and the snow sculptures.
And of course, we had the famous LeTao sweets on our way back to the station.

The Otaru canal was once used to transport goods to the warehouses alongside the canal which are now converted into museums, restaurants and shops.

We were there once during the day and again at night to see the light up for the Snow Light Path Festival.

You can access the Otaru canal via a 15-20 minutes walk from the JR station or by bus.

it is best to take the train from Sapporo. as soon as you go out of the facade of the train station cross the street and go straight until you see otaru canal. best to see it during winter. drop by otaru beer garden.

I visit Otaru Canal in February 2020 means lots of snow, cold, -6°, windy and snow festival all along the street and park.
I stop at Otaru Canal, this is the most romantic winter view, lots of candle from the winter festival volunteer. The view was dramatic and lots of people as well.
But I take some picture for you.
Please check the winter festival around the Otaru Canal before you visit here
But in others seasons, Otaru will be fine and beautiful as well. Hope I can visit here again and again.

This signature canal is a must-visit in Otaru. A row of stone-walled warehouses lie on one side of the bank and cobbled stone pathway on the other bank. In winter, bits of snow and melted ice scatter on the pathway and even though it's very slippery to walk, the whole ambience is very lovely and romantic. Come during sunset and it's even more magical!

We did a day trip to Otaru from Sapporo. The canal is Sooo beautiful. Luckily it wasn't too crowded, we went in February. I wonder if the Coronavirus had something to do with that. Regardless the lack of crowds made the experience that much more enjoyable.

For adult 1500yen, kid 500yen if im not mistaken. Its a rare to experience that kind of activity. Otaru is actually a place of port like Fremantle in Perth Aussie. Just like that.

The first section of Hokkaido’s 1,140 meters long canal was first built about 120 years ago for shipping purposes. It was completed in 1923 and partially restored in the 1980s. Its width varies from 20 to 40 meres. With the declining use after WWII for shipping purposes, today it is more of a tourist attraction. Many restaurants, cafes, and souvenir and other shops are located in the old former warehouse buildings adjacent to the canal. We had a relaxing walk alongside the canal. It is especially nice at night when the gas lamps light up the area.

The Otaru Snow Light Path Festival is a winter festival that held every February in Otaru , we came here by taxi from Nesiko, it cost us around USD 150-200 round trip.
Luckily, during this time the city decorated in lights and small snow statues for only ten days.

Although we did not see The Sapporo Snow Festival this time we as other did. But we enjoyed the romantic night very much.

Went there on a half day trip (2nd half).

As we reached there, there was heavy snow. This took away a good 1-2 hours of our time (we lingered around at a nearby shopping mall waiting for the snow to reside)

Then we finally got to Otaru Canal.
What a wonderful place! Romantic indeed.

Though, by the time we finished our dinner at around 7-8 pm, most of the shops were already closed. Pretty much a ghost town at night haha.

Still, no regrets going there.
I'd say, it's a must visit place.
