I'd expected more and was highly disappointed upon reaching the canal. There's really nothing much there and to me the view is so average. Perhaps it look more beautiful in winter but nope I'm not going back.

Very beautiful town with several shops, restaurants and bakeries, seafood is excellent. There are a lot of Music box shops and glass products.

Upon arrival at this Otaru Canal (小樽運河), one cannot resist taking our their cameras or camera phones to take a few shots of this serene and beautiful canal. The Otaru canal used to be a busy port in the early days, but became obsolete in the late 20th century. Walking along this canal, you can still see many old warehouses... More

There are stone & brick warehouses built in a row along the canal. Ideal place for picture taking and you can easily spend about 20-30 minutes or so there just to admire the beauty of the area. I joined the Chuo bus tour so it was a bit of a rush. Time given for this tour is only sufficient for... More

Beautiful canal especially during Feb when they lit up the sidewalks. Nice stroll along the canal...

First time i arrived at Otaru canal, it was at night and the place is simply worth the anticipation as it was lighted and dreamy. Second time which I visited was the next morning. Not only was I able to see the canal in the day light, it was also a great walk down the little streets to discover the... More

We didn't actually go to take a boat ride, but passed through in the evening. The lights were so pretty!

Came here a few times in summer and winter. Obligatory tourist spot. Weather changes quite fast sometimes. It's beautiful in the evening when the lights are on as well.

We arrived at the Canal shortly after sundown. The blue light display was pretty, but not as impressive as we had imagined. I think the late December/February display might be better. Otaru town however is worth walking through! The train ride, with slight snow drifts were delightful.
