If you drop by here for lunch, don't miss this little Tempura shop (facing the road on the right of the building). Tempura Wakisaka is one of the best tempura we have ever tasted. Seats are limited to 8 per seating and they close quite early, if i am not mistaken 3 or 4pm. We went at 12noon and there was no line but if there was the wait would have been worth it. Servings were very generous and reasonably priced for the quality seafood we got. We also tried the potato croquette next door, very tasty too. Unfortunately we were too full to try the ice cream with melon or the tokayaki. Great place to bring the family for snacks that will appease any appetite.

It closes for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Lots of street food places. It seems quiet even in the summer season, I think partly because people were eating to the food hall on the other side of the canal.

Otaru Denuki-koji is a small and picturesque food plaza opposite Asakusa Bridge and Tourist Information Centre. I ate crab don and crab miso soup for 2500 yen. The seafood chef was friendly, and when I walked around the food plaza, I saw that the walls had a lot of messages for him with great feedback. This food plaza is worth checking out as a meal option if you are near Otaru Canal. At Otaru Denuki-koji, you can also climb up a short spiral staircase to a small observatory with narrow walking space overlooking Otaru Canal.
My suggested path for a walking tour around Otaru is as follows. JR Otaru Station > Otaru Canal > Asakusa Bridge and Tourist Information Centre > Otaru Denuki-koji (food plaza) > Otaru Canal Terminal > Sakaimachidori Shopping Street (glass shops and eateries) > Marchen Crossroads (music box shops) > Sushiyadori Street (sushi eateries) > Former Temiya Railway (old railway track) > JR Otaru Station

Located at a corner opposite Otaru Canal, this place has a look-out tower that offers an excellent view of Otaru. There was a bell on top of the tower. This place also has a number of small unique restaurants that serves a wide varieties of food, delicacies and souvenirs. Very nice photo spot.

Stumbled into this little gem by accident. You actually have to do a little exploration in the narrow pathway between the small shops. We were drawn into a cozy Yakitori grill place, where the patron can fit 10 guests around his grill bar. Started out with a few test orders and ended up ordering EVERYTHING on the menu. A super tasty and entertaining experience. When we were done, we just moved a few steps further to a Whiskey bar with exceptional choices of the best Japanese malts. Worth visiting!

We stumbled into this from a side entrance and were immediately charmed by the quaint alleys full of active shops. But, very quickly, we realised that everything was just a little too new and perfect to be a real old part of town, and once we emerged onto the street from the main entrance, we realised that this is a mall development aimed at tourists. Skip it. The real town is inland and to the South.
