If you drop by here for lunch, don't miss this little Tempura shop (facing the road on the right of the building). Tempura Wakisaka is one of the best tempura we have ever tasted. Seats are limited to 8 per seating and they close quite early, if i am not mistaken 3 or 4pm. We went at 12noon and there was no line but if there was the wait would have been worth it. Servings were very generous and reasonably priced for the quality seafood we got. We also tried the potato croquette next door, very tasty too. Unfortunately we were too full to try the ice cream with melon or the tokayaki. Great place to bring the family for snacks that will appease any appetite.

Directly opposite one end of the Otaru canal is Denuki Koji which has an observation deck as well as many small little food establishments. We opted for Sawasaki Suisan No3 which was a small area with U-shaped counter table surrounding the food preparation area. Great and fresh food here!

Very charming place for photos, a resembling a miniature old traditional japanese town. All the food shop also very small. Beware of large crowd, the place can be easily over flowing with people during busy time. Its too cram inside the facility due to tight space. The facility is very small you can finish walking around less than 30 minutes Dont forget to try zangi (looks like karaage but its prettt big and juicy) sold by one of the booth here. Its very tasty. While there’s also a shop that selling famous croquette here.

Have eaten in this area several times over the years of visiting Otaru, and had food that ranges from very traditional (and strange to Western eyes) to modern meat or vegetable burgers in a bun - and all have been freshly prepared and of excellent quality. It is a visually quirky spot to visit during sightseeing in the canal area, and certainly well worth exploring if you want to eat.
