About Omakase
Otaru, an old, prosperous town in Hokkaido founded on trade, is now a popular tourist destination for many tourists both from Japan and abroad, and pairs well with a visit to nearby Sapporo. This tour starts at Otaru Station, and covers the main attractions of the city center as you stroll along with a local guide. Even better, the guide will recommend spots that only a local would know!

Had arranged a walking tour over the net (thru Omakase Tours) and it turned out that another couple on the ship had done the same. Pouring rain all day. We met the guide, Chieko, at the JR train station after the taxi ride. Her English was poor and she had no plan B for the heavy rain. We stopped at a small Mall, mostly to get out of the rain, then went walking to the small Otaru canal which could have been scenic except for the downpour. She tried to walk us into multiple trinket and jewelry shops but after the 3rd one we rebelled and said "no more". When she tried to walk us to lunch in a shabby looking restaurant, and that we were going to have to pay extra for it, the 4 of us decided to truncate the trip and we caught a taxi back to the ship.

We booked this walking tour with Trip Advisor. Our guide Cheiko met us at the train station. The awesome thing was the trip was at an easy pace. Cheiko guided us to the shops for items we wanted and helping with purchases. She also arranged us a visit to a local Japanese bath. We loved this tour much better than the cruise ship shore excursions.1
