We noticed this Shinto shrine in a peaceful setting when moving to the Orthodox Church from the Hakodate Ward Public Hall. The churches and the public hall are all listed on guidebooks, but not this shrine. I understand that its history can be traced back to the 12th century and the shrine is the oldest Shinto shrine in Hokkaido. Most tourist attraction sites in Hakodate are quite western style reflecting Hakodate's history as one of the first ports to be opened and the Meiji Governments rapid development policy to catch up with the western countries starting from the middle of the 19th century. It is worthwhile to visit the shrine briefly to understand that people were in Hakodate before that and that they prayed here for maritime safety.
