This value-packed trip with a nationally-licensed and experienced multilingual tour guide is a fantastic and efficient way to explore Hakodate!

Hakodate has a long history of international trade and as such hosted a small foreign community. Japanese service standard has not failed me. The customer service at the Tourist information was far beyond excellent. They can speak Mandarin and English too. Knowledgeable and communicate well. Great for them to share lots of interesting information. Check them up.

I visited Hakodate Tourist Information Center located within Hakodate Station to ask a very particular question that no one had been in condition to answer: where to buy or taste Hokkaido's famous specialty/artisanal/gourmet cheeses in Hakodate. I had not been able to find a clue, not even in Trip Advisor. I was received by Mr. Peter, who immediately contacted his personal wine and sake supplier to check if they had some in stock, also indicating me with unlimited patience how to get there. But not only that: on the following day I came by to thank him, and Peter-san was already aware of my visit to the wine boutique, since he had personally checked that everything had turned out successfully. Only in Japan. Thanks a lot, Peter-san, thanks a lot, Hakodate Tourist Information Center.

Although English is not their preferred language, I encounted a member of staff who did well for me. He found timetables for the local private railway company and researched when the night excursion trains ran. Unfortunately, not in November. There are a few brochures in different languages (English, Chinese, Korean, Thai), but not a big variety. Perhaps asking, might reveal more information or a translation.

We found this office really helpful especially in planning our walking trips up Mount Hakodate and train trips to local towns. They have timetables in English for all the local trains and the trams. One lady there even translated into Japanese my desire to collect shells in the fish market. A concept that the fish vendors found completely foreign. I suggest you call in here before planning any sight seeing or travelling in the area.
