This castle was built by the Hakodate government led by Enomoto Takeaki, who used Goryokaku as its base, as a secondary castle and to protect Hokkaido Toshogu Shrine. The earthworks have now been maintained and it is beautiful. There is nothing nearby so it is an inconvenient place to get to, but it is a necessary place to see Goryokaku.

五稜郭に比べ規模も小さい土塁です。

正直この程度の土塁で数日立て籠って応戦したことに驚きます。
復興土塁ですが当時の戦争の様子を想像する上では役に立ちます。

国内でも珍しい文字通り「四稜郭」の遺構です

四稜郭へは湯の川から車で20分程度、市の中心部からは多少離れますが、案内板も整備されています。訪問時は初雪の時期、土曜日とはいえ朝9時前だったからかもしれませんが、観光客らしき姿は見当たらず、地元のボランティアの方が「これから」といった状況でした。
四稜郭は確かに遺構しかなく、歴史に興味がない方が来られても「ああそうか」で終わってしまうと思いますが、綺麗に整備、清掃された遺跡を見ると、これはこれでよいのでは？と思います。

本当に跡しかありません。
幕末が好きな方はいいと思いますが、普通の観光客は「？」ってなりそうです。
人も少なく私たちの他には観光タクシーで案内されている老夫婦のみでした。

歴史的価値ある史跡

五稜郭から北約３Ｋにありますが、行きづらい場所のため車利用が良いと思います。
四稜郭までの途中に小さな案内版が何か所か設置されており、無料の駐車場があります。
四稜郭は土塁の４隅に砲座を構えただけのため、外側に土が盛ってあるだけの構造です。
国の史跡に指定されており、入口に簡単な案内版が設置されていますので、これを読んでから見学すると歴史的価値がわかります。

何もない、東屋だけ

何もないが、史跡の案内と東屋がある。車がなければ行けないどころであり、周辺にも何もないので、観光弛としては疑問。ただ、史跡としては価値がある場所なので、歴史好きの方にはおススメ

桜の頃はお勧めです。

あまり知られてなく少し外れになりますが、なかなかお勧めの観光スポットです。
五稜郭と違い全体を見渡せます。

桜の頃は入り口に繋がる道の両脇に桜の木が並び素敵な桜のトンネルになります。

五稜郭防御のための堡塁跡

五稜郭の北方3kmの位置に作られた五稜郭防御用の堡塁です。空濠と土塁で構成されていて、元々建造物は作られなかったようです。現在はトイレと東屋が設置され公園として整備されています。周囲には桜が植えられ、地元の方には桜の名所としても認知されているようです。
建造当時の堡塁がほぼ完璧な状態で残されていて、防衛拠点として考えられていたことが良く判ります。虎口（入口）には桝形が設置され、土塁も結構急になっています。四隅にはスロープが設置され、大砲を置いて砲台として利用できるようになっています。当時の構造が良く判る、城郭跡として見ると非常に良い施設だと思います。
訪問される場合は車で行かれることをお勧めします。四稜郭前バス停が入口の目の前にありますが、便が少ないので不便です。

函館にある五稜郭ならぬ四稜郭。五稜郭と比べると残念な感じだから、こじんまりとしているのが逆に好意的に思える。

五稜郭と比較してはいけない位の小さな敷地です。１０分～１５分程度で１周できてしまいます。何も掲示がなければ、何処かの小さな城跡です。
