After the US opened the Hkodate port to international trade, a strong European culture and influence came to the area, including European Religions. These are small but beautiful churches close together and cane be easily seen over an hour of so walk around the neighborhood.

One of the oldest Catholic churches in Japan. Worth checking out - it doesn't take too long to see the inside.

Te Roman Catholic Church is located at the top of the Daisan-zaka slope meaning that it is perched high above the city. The architecture is quite striking especially when you consider that it's not built on an oversized lot.

This Roman Catholic church, one of the oldest in Japan, started as a wooden structure in 1877 and was rebuilt in 1924 after a serious fire. In Motomachi area, there are many Occidental constructions, which attract tourists, and Motomachi Catholic Church is maybe the most representative one. It is free to enter the garden and take a picture.

We visited the Church by early June but by the time of arrival, it was closed already. So we could only view from the surroundings. The church was located on top of Hiyori-zaka slope overlooking the Bay area. Behind the church proper was a kindergarten belong to the same church organisation. Worth to have a stroll around the area while... More

After a short walk from the bus stop, found this quiet Catholic church. It is also close to the Russian Orthodox Church.

Motomachi Catholic Church is close to Hiyori Zaka Slope. The church is small and closed on Friday so I didn’t go inside.

Beautiful church located on top of the hill overlooking the town. Interior is gorgeous and very calming and peaceful presence. Worth a visit even if you're not Catholic!!
