This church in Motomachi is in such a beautiful, serene location. Be sure to see it if you are exploring the area. All churches ask that you remove your shoes before entering and this one does not allow interior photography. There is no admission charge.

As you're walking around the area, the ropeway, the hilly-streets, finding a place to overlook the harbour, this church pops up, with its steeple and cross. Very impeccable, and grounds well kept, and inviting. Worth a visit if you're in the area, won't take a...More

This is a small but very attractive church built in the 19th Century. It is certainly worth a visit if you are in the area or are interested in the early Western involvement with Japan.

We have also visited the Roman Catholic Church in Motomachi district. Although the size of church was small when compared with those in Europe, the architecture and internal designs were nice and worth to have a look inside. By the side of the church, there...More

After the US opened the Hkodate port to international trade, a strong European culture and influence came to the area, including European Religions. These are small but beautiful churches close together and cane be easily seen over an hour of so walk around the neighborhood.

One of the oldest Catholic churches in Japan. Worth checking out - it doesn't take too long to see the inside.

Te Roman Catholic Church is located at the top of the Daisan-zaka slope meaning that it is perched high above the city. The architecture is quite striking especially when you consider that it's not built on an oversized lot.

This Roman Catholic church, one of the oldest in Japan, started as a wooden structure in 1877 and was rebuilt in 1924 after a serious fire. It shows off brick construction, a 108-foot-high belfry and a tall pointed roof. But I did not find this...More

In Motomachi area, there are many Occidental constructions, which attract tourists, and Motomachi Catholic Church is maybe the most representative one. It is free to enter the garden and take a picture.

My visit was a brief one during a weekday so I do not know if there's any Sat vigil mass. There should be sunday masses but probably in Japanese.
