In the guidebook or other websites mentioned that this is one of the attractive activities to do. I would not make it as a priority if possible. Even the lightning was available in Feb Festival but because the slope is not too long, it really not worth to go just for it.

Visited during winter. Was expecting snow for a white scene. Unfortunately no snow. However, it is a nice slope with lightings at both sides of the trees (during sunset). From the top of the slope, you can see the port. Worth visiting for those who likes to take pictures. Plan your journey well as this is near the Mt. Hakodate... More

As others have already said, Hachimanzaka has a San Francisco feeling. It's situated in the old foreign quarter of Hakodate, so there are a myriad of Meiji era buildings on and around the street.

This is an excellent location to go for a relaxing walk. There is an excellent scenic view of the water and port area.

Think San Francisco. This is not a very long slope like San Francisco but I had a great relaxing walk from Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse to Mt Hakodate Ropeway. Enjoyed the building structure and autumn foliage in lovely weather....

I wondered what the fuss was all about and then I went to see for myself and agreed that the scenic view was amazing. Just be sure to take a taxi to the top of the slope. The climb is brutal for kids and oldies.

Charming slope in the Motomachi area that looks out onto the Port of Hakodate. Get someone to take your photo against this very stunning backdrop.

This street runs up the hill to the street with all the churches and the entrance to the ropeway. We took photos and enjoyed the walk.

Hachimanzaka is the most well-known hill in the area (and Hakodate), providing a nice view to the ocean. Many hills parallel to Hachimanzaka also overlook the water. So it's worth walking around the area. Nearby are many buildings from the days when Hakodate was the first international port. The Old Public Hall and Old British Consulate are withing walking distance.

This is just one of the hills (called "Slope" on the map) that rewards you with a great view as you make it farther uphill. Most people stand in the middle of the road to get a nice photo where the street and view are framed by the trees.
