Only a block away from where the cruise ship shuttle bus leaves you off at the train station is the Boni Moriya Department Store. It is on a main street, the Easn National Highway, and is where the Hakodate Tram runs.
While not as big as the giant Tokyo Department stores, this smaller version has a lot to offer in its 7 floors plus basement. It is also, inside, a feast for your eyes.
Never miss a basement of a Japanese department store for that is where the groceries and other food products including confectionery boxed gifts, and great pastries are located.
Other floors included normal clothing, fashion, hardware, kitchen, and home items, etc. It is fun to see a different side of products used in other cultures.
You don't have to worry about tourist price mark-ups as everything is priced and the locals shop here more than the visitors.

As far as department stores go, this was worth a walk through while passing. From food to clothing to pharmacy to newsagent, a wide range of goods.
