You catch the boat from either end of the bay. The boat leaves every hour and the cruise lasts 1.5 hours. It heads around the lake close to the shore up near the volcano and then over to a small island where you can disembark for 15 minutes to see the Marimo and a large tank full of landlocked salmon. Gentle trip, good photos of Mt Oakan and the active volcano opposite. Saw a few birds- grebes, ducks and a Western Osprey heading off carrying a fish. Definitely worth a trip out.

Nice cruise around the beautiful Lake Akan and includes a visit to see the Marimo, which is an interesting looking round green moss that is only found in Lake Akan.

The small town around Lake Akan is pretty quiet during the time I visited in July 2016. We took a JPY1,900 cruise around the lake which took about an hour. This includes a brief 15min stop at the Marimo Observatory in the lake. It seems like it was the only place to see real, wild Marimos of considerable sizes. All the Marimos were contained in one big tank in the observatory. It was a nice forested area on the observatory. Wish they allowed us more time to wander on the island before returning to the boat. Private parking was available at the various lots around the pier at JPY500 per entry.

This is a place that you can see the MARIMO, looks like a green ball, when you take the cruise ride at Akan Lake.
