Unfortunately on the day we visited it was snowing hard, but the center has numerous exhibits regarding wildlife seen in the Kushiro area. There is an open air observatory at the top, a gift shop and cafe.

The observatory is a worth a visit if only to get a view from the top of the wetlands below. There is a walk around the marsh which is either there and back to an observation point or circular. Either will take the same time, but there are a lot of steps on the long route. Put on some insect repellent, the mosquitoes will love you.

We went to the Kushiro Marsh Observatory as part of a tour from Kushiro. Although we saw a few migratory swans in fields along the road, the only cranes we saw were stuffed ones in the Observatory. That being said, there are a lot of interesting displays of the local wildlife inside the observatory with good views of the surrounding countryside from the observation decks.

Very nice walk through the trees. Wonderful views from the observation deck. A quick warning to those taking this tour. The walkway is a raised wooden deck. Very slippery when I was there, recent rain with fresh fallen leaves made for a very slick surface. Watch your step.

Other than the building, there is nothing to see here except a large flat area of land that is supposed to be the marsh...(and it did not look like a marsh to me!) The visitor center is OK, but the outside area offers little. There is a wooded walkway plank that meanders through the parkgrounds overlooking the "marsh" from afar. Other than the museum displays we saw very little of interest.

Took a half hour hike to the lookout point using the wooden board trail, but ended disappointed. In my opinion, nothing much to see, except a huge marshland. No cranes here too during my visit and we had to detour to the the Japanese Crane Centre to catch some cranes.

Very informative place to learn about the ecosystem of the Marsh. However, we went during last part of May so it looked very dry and not good in photos.

Just be creative with your shots as the brick building is a nice backdrop.

Offers 360 degree of the Marsh.

Windy and chiller though with scenic view at the rooftop. Small exhibition introducing Kushiro Marsh before starting trekking the marsh for animal watching.

Kushiro Marsh Observatory marks the start of the 1 hour circular path (about 2.5 km) with a great observation point right in the centre to view the marshlands . Please take note that it is not needed to pay 470 yen to walk around the circular path outside the observatory. The 470 yen is to access the observatory on the top, which offers a wide view of the surroundings. If foggy (which is common), just skip entering the observatory and proceed to walk the wooden path into the woods (take note that there are numerous wooden steps). A great 1.5 hour excursion in Kushiro.

Quite disappointed with Kushiro Town itself - it's basically an industrial town. Even the Fisherman's Wharf was nothing charming. The marshland (maybe I don't know how to appreciate) is basically swamps ! The so called suspended bridge was just 1m above ground & climbing the steps up is not worth it. I will tell my friends to skip this place
