We booked a guided nature walk at Lake Akan (tel 0154-67-3200) and our friendly guide, Tero, recommended the Lake Taro / Jiro hike. The fees for the hike included transport to and from the trail (approx 10 minutes from our hotel), and insurance coverage.

Our group included our 2 girls aged 10 and 12, and the hike took us through pristine jungle with lake and river views. We spotted some deer at the beginning of the hike, and a few squirrels. The temperature was temperate enough in early September for us to be clad in just jeans and T - shirts. Along the walk our guide pointed out trees that had been marked by woodpeckers and bears (claw marks), who are native inhabitants, wild flowers that were poisonous, and wild edible mint. The path was adjacent to the only river (out of a total of 11) which exits Lake Akan.

We city slickers thoroughly enjoyed the pristine views, the fresh air, the much - needed exercise, and the chance to be up close and personal with nature. If you were aware of the location of the trail head, you could manage the hike quite easily by yourself.

Trekking in the snow to see Jirou-ko and Tarou-ko was a memorable experience. It was a tough trek for us newbies but the view was worth the effort. Going in early-April allowed us to see some parts of the lake still frozen which was so beautiful when set against the backdrop of the green trees and forest ground still covered in snow. I'd love to visit again in a different season. To trek here, register with the Akan Tourist Information Center.
