After walking around Lake Shikotsu, I went to the visitor center to beat the cold. However, within a few minutes of entering the museum, it was closing time at 4:00 pm, and I was forced to leave. Inside the visitor center, there were exhibits of creatures that live in Lake Shikotsu, and it was a nice place to relax if you had time.

It is a visitor center located on the lake. Information about Lake Shikotsu is displayed in the museum. Lake Shikotsu is all second in Japan in terms of water storage, depth and clarity. Lake Biwa holds the most water, Lake Tazawa holds the most depth, and Lake Mashu holds the most transparency. The exhibition features photographs of the Caldera Outer Ring Mountain, which slithers into a tubular plaza in an image that surrounds Lake Shikotsu.

This is a clean and new center located on the shore of Lake Shikotsu.
The center has a theme of "Forests, mountains, lakes, another journey to Lake Shikotsu," and fascinatingly introduces the great nature of Lake Shikotsu through models and large photographs, including the current active volcano, the ecology of creatures around Lake Shikotsu, and the world under the lake.
There are also wonderful exhibits about the history and life in the region.

Most attractions we found in Hokkaido do not charge for parking unless you are in the city or somewhere really busy. So why does Shikotsu feel they can charge people for parking in what is basically a national park. Frustrated by this, we waited till the early evening to look through this area. It is pretty and has some nice little cafes. Best to leave the car around the corner and walk in to the centre.

The Shikotsuko Visitor Center is absolutely terrific. You can get excellent tourist information about Chitose, read and see stuffed wildlife in the area and watch a very informative video about the formation of the lake. The Visitor Center is right at the lake. Somehow I had gotten the impression that it was a distance away. They also sell reasonably priced souvenirs.

This centre has the requisite stuffed animals found in the vast majority of centres in Hokkaido but also has a very up to date and well presented presentation featuring different aspects of the lakes makeup and the fauna and flora that call it home. As others have noted with a ¥400 parking fee to cover there needs to be something other than a quick squiz at another scenic lake to make it worth the stop. We felt however that this was one of the better presented centres that we visited in ten days on Hokkaido and held more interest than other areas where we had copped similar parking fees and facilities were confined to the same range of specialty foods and souvenirs that are present everywhere on the island. This facility made it well worth the stop. We left knowing much more about the lake's ecosystem than when we arrived.

This was a place to resr from the snow and cold. There was lots of information about the lake, the video presentation was good, but literature in English was sadly lacking. Be sure however to visit this place if you have kids.

When staying at the Lake its worth visiting the Visitor information center it has many good displays on the local area with a beautiful view over the lake, and is a nice place to just sit and relax and the near by main car park area is where they have many snow sculptures on display in the winter.

This is a really useful vistor centre where we can find out more about the history of Lake Shikotsu. I call it Lake Shikotsu, as Shikotsuko means Shikotsu lake (ko = lake) so it is weird to call it lake twice. =)

We came to this impressive log building whilst staying at a nearby resort. There were some very good explanations of the lake and the various wildlife and trees growing there. There were displays of live fish and interacting exhibits.
