About
Located in the eastern part of Hokkaido, Akan-mashu National Park is one of the longest established parks in Hokkaido. Most of the park area is covered in natural forest comprising mainly subarctic mixed coniferous forest that is said to be some of the most primeval forests of all the national parks in Japan. The foundation for Akan-mashu National Park comprises three caldera landforms --the Akan Caldera, Kussharo Caldera, and Mashu Caldera --which were formed by the volcanic activity of the Chishima Volcanic Zone. With several volcano-lake pairs in close proximity within a narrow space, the area is nationally valuable.

Absolutely loved the area, there were so much to do here. There were three lakes that you could go visit, we booked a hotel next to one of the lakes and hotel employee told us in winter, you could see cranes living near the hotel. Sadly we went in summer so no birds around. But besides the lakes, you could also visit the national park where the rocks were yellow due to all the sulfur in the area, and you could try the volcano coffee in the shop, one of the best I have ever had for sure

My partner and I visited this park on a bus tour and is oft the case I was the only gaijin, which added to the fun. The three lakes to view are Mashu, Kussharo and Iozan. The most beautiful of these is Lake Mashu. We enjoyed walking around the tourist area of Sulfur Mountain and snacking on tasty boiled eggs.

Akan National Park falls off against Shiretoko and Daisetsuzan National Parks in Hokkaido, but oh man is this place wonderful. Very scenic lakes (Bihoro Pass! 243 highway south out of Bihoro, the viewpoint will literally take your breath away!), viewpoints and swimming is possible at some locations.
Absolutely awesome. Go if you have the time!

Lake Mashu which is in this national park is gorgeous. Even though the islands on the lake cannot be visited as they are a protected area the views from the scenic views are spectacular .

Spent hours photographing Whopper Swans along lake Kussharo. Winter here and bask on the shore line warmed by the volcanic heat. Cold in the mornings but the lighting and photographs made it worthwhile
