White steeples
Mar 2020 • Solo
This is a Catholic Church, which was built on the occasion of 400 anniversary of Xavier’s visit to Yamaguchi. Its white steeples in a blue sky are very beautiful. As I visited, it was closed (from March 16-31) due to spreading corona virus infection. I should come again one day.

Serene church with stunning grotto in autumn
Nov 2019
This church is located about 10-15 minutes’ walk from Yamaguchi Station, and is located up on a hill. The slope isn’t very long and steep don’t worry! Parking is available on top of the slope too, just like a past reviewer mentioned. The parking spaces below are for the restaurants at the bottom of the hill. The church itself is quite small. Entrance is on the first floor; visitors enter via the museum showcasing the life and journey of St. Francis Xavier. Visitors are free to enter, but are encouraged to drop a donation before entering (they kindly ask you donate 100 yen and above per person). The second floor is the church itself; the design is pretty modern, with beautiful stain glasses. Visitors exit via the second floor. Nothing much else on the grounds, though the grotto is also absolutely stunning in autumn!

I really like the simplicity of the church
Apr 2019 • Family
I really like the simplicity of this church. Mass was a more crowded than expected (which was nice).
The main reason why I decided to write this review is because of parking. If you are like me, I arrived at the bottom of the church, which is next to a bakery (nice breads, worth a go, if you need some food on the go).
We could not figure whether we were supposed to park the at the bottom of the hill (maybe because there was someone standing outside the bakery, seemingly guiding traffic for a wedding).
PLEASE go up the hill (by Our Lady's statue) and you will enter to the bigger space that has parking lots for those of us attending Mass.

we were late…
Apr 2018 • Couples
We read about this impressive and important Church in Yamaguchi so we planned for a trip here. But it was not a smooth journey after a rushed day, and a deviated track. In the end we reached just 15 mins late of 5pm, the Church was closed.
Like 2 more Japanese couples we try to walk around both first and second level for alternative access, only to be convinced that we have to be earlier the next time.
The St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church (サビエル記念聖堂) commemorates the missionary Francis Xavier, who was active in spreading Christianity to Asia in the 1500s. We read about his life when in Nagasaki (26 Christian Martyrs' Museum) as the first man to preach Christianity in Japan. .He has spent a few months in Yamaguchi and that’s the link to this fabulous church established here.
From the exterior it appeared to be a large one, facing the large Kameyama Park. We spent about 15 mins walking around the external and admiring the architectural.
No regrets as I made my prayer just outside the main entrance. The serenity around adds to the solemn and some epiphany realisation…
