Designated as a national treasure, this pagoda is one of three famous pagodas in Japan beside that of Daigoji and Horyuji. As I visited this place, the weather was very nice, and I just forgot time passing, while contemplating. It is just amazing.

I live not far from Yamaguchi and have visited the Pagoda and Temple for the first time. The Pagoda is considered one of Japan's great Pagoda's. The layout is beautiful with the pond in front and hills in the background. You can really get some amazing photos here. I want to come back during each season to see the Pagoda and surrounding nature. Walk around the park and temple to get other views of the pagoda. If in Yamaguchi Prefecture, make the Ruriko Five Story Pagoda a must see!

This pagoda is beautifully placed in a park at the foot of a mountain, with a pond in front of it, which enhances the global appreciation you have for the temple. The pagoda itself is surrounded by nature and there is no entrance fee. You can go for a walk in the park, and visit the temple that is right next to it. The Ruriko temple is a marvel of the 15th century and one of only 2 national treasure structures of Yamaguchi prefecture. Please visit, it is worth it.

山口市は静かな街。県庁所在地とは思えないほど小さな盆地。その一角に国宝の五重の塔ごあるとは思いもしなかった。この街の歴史を紐解くと納得する。大内氏の栄華を感じる。Yamaguchi city is a quiet city. This city is a capital of this prefecture and it is in the center of basin surrounded by not tall mountains. This is a national treasure because this city has long history by the Ofuchi family. The Ouchies was governor of this area before Tokugawa and established ultimate and original culture. You should spend a few days there for learning it’s history.

English history available. We even saw a bride and groom getting pictures taken. Short walk around the grounds. There is a koi pond right under the pagoda. Makes for a beautiful scenic photo session.

The grounds here are pretty no matter the weather. It was so cold (2C) when we went I was afraid the surrounding grounds would be brown and dead but instead we even saw some blossoms! The pagoda is a nice picturesque place even on a dreary day in the winter - and that means no crowds!

This pagoda makes such a handsome picture. Standing across from a pretty koi pond, and alone with the background of rich greenery, the pagoda looks delicate and exquisite. Among 70 or so remaining 5-storied pagodas in Japan, This one at Ruriko Temple is unique with its cypress bark roofing. The huge column that penetrates and support the structure has, over the years, shrunk and has a couple of patches to maintain the length. The roof rafters that line up under the eaves are odd shaped, fatter on one end, but creates beautiful sequence of pattern. The temple had a number of volunteer guides hanging around to give you a free commentary. I suspect there may be an English speaking one.

In my opinion, this is the most beautiful pagoda in Japan. And I've seen all of them - all with any kind of historical significance.

This is a famous landmark, and a must-see when visiting Yamaguchi. You can actually walk from Yamaguchi Station, but that might take you at least half an hour. What I did was take the JR bus (destination: Hagi), and drop-off at Yamaguchi-kenchomae, that takes you about 6 minutes and shaves off about half of the journey time to the pagoda. The bus stop for the bus is directly outside the station, but note that none of the signage or announcements are in English, but you can sort of guess the locations based on the pronunciation of the abovementioned names. Since it is a JR bus, the JR pass covers this journey!
No entry fees to see the pagoda and the surrounding park area. The area is really quite scenic and beautiful, more so with the leaves in peak autumn colours! You don’t really get the Kyoto-level sort of concentration of maple trees here, but the upside is that you don’t get the associated crowd that comes along with it either! It was raining on the day we visited, so some of the photos don’t really do the place much justice (it’s not as gloomy as the pics depict it to be). There was some foot traffic, but not too crowded and plenty of opportunities to wander and breathe without feeling like you’re in someone’s way.
