Quiet relaxing place

Tanabe seems a rather neglected museum - even though it is set on the best street in Matsue, next door to Lafcadio Hearn’s house & Buke Yashiki, a middle-ranking Samurai residence. It’s right opposite a busy canal & Matsue Castle. The area was quietly bustling – yet I was the only visitor during my time there. Such a pity. It’s worth a visit as you’ll be passing it anyway, if you are sightseeing in Matsue.

The Museum itself is a spotlessly clean modem building set back from its frontage – an old Samurai residence & a lovely Japanese garden is in-between. The exhibits appear to relate largely to tea & include lacquerware, paintings & pottery. There is a pleasant area in which you can relax & see the garden in comfortable (western) chairs. It’s not huge – but providesa helpful, quiet, stop-off & sit down, whilst sightseeing. There are western toilets & the place is easily accessible for the disabled.
