Typical wooden building of the Meiji era
Sep 2019
This was constructed by the city in 1903. Located in the Matsue Castle grounds near the southern watch tower, next to the Matsue Shrine, it is free to enter and has some reception style rooms reminiscent of the Meiji architectural era. It was a State Guest House, once used by Crown Prince Yoshito in 1907 and then became an official city welcome venue and the site of various exhibitions and assemblies. It has been renovated and has a lovely staircase but is somewhat empty.

Nice if you enjoy architecture

It's a nice place to visit, and imagine what it was like living around here long ago.
Not much to see beside this. But it's a one of these western Japanese buildings ;)

Musty old building
Sep 2019
Calling this a museum is generous. It's an old building with a bureaucratic history of no particular interest. Surrounded by the castle grounds, it's perhaps only interesting to show how castle grounds were used at different periods in history.

Moderately interesting

Also close to the entrance gate (next to Matsue Shrine) this building built in 1903 is standing. It used to be a State Guest House in former days but is now in use as a Folk Museum. On the outside it really looks it age and is, in my opinion, just mildly interesting. Being a museum at present it is accessible of course.

A glimpse of the times that are gone
Oct 2018 • Business
This post-Edo era offers an interesting insight in the early period of Japan's modernization. You can feel the Meiji/Taisho atmosphere and wonder how must it have felt at that time. I would like to suggest they open a nice cafe-terrace here, because the town is nice and customers will certainly gladly flock in.
