A shrine famous for Inari (Fox Gods)
Mar 2020
Here, you can see a lot of various statues of a fox. In Japan, it is said that the God of Inari controls crops and harvests, and the fox works as his messenger.
There were many statues of a fox lined up, some of them were so old and lacks their parts like ears or tails, and others seemed new and kept the vivid color. All statues had different faces. I found a dentition in the old statue, which seemed just as if the real.

Nice statues and a pretty environment make this a pleasant stop wandering the grounds near the castle.

a picturesque beautiful shrine (favourite shrine of Lafcadio Hearn)
Mar 2013 • Friends
If you follow the traces of the author Lafcadio Hearn through Matsue city, you will definitly come to visit this shrine, because it was his favourite one.
But even if you don't have an interest in Lafcadio Hearn, I still recommend this special and a bit hidden place.
The Jozan Inari Shrine is dedicated to the worship of the god Inari, the fox god. So at the shrine grounds you will see many fox statues. Especially for foreign tourist it has a lot to offer, because it is so detailed and colorful. It was really fun to explore it and I had a great view down the hill with the mountains and the forests in the background. There were even English descriptions all over the shrine grounds, so you can learn about its history.
