I visited during the Morotabune festival (Dec. 3), an ancient custom with ties to the Kojiki (Shinto book of mythology). Fans of Ebisu, a mirthful god of fishing with distinctly Japanese origins, should make sure not to miss this shrine, as it is the head of all Ebisu shrines. Despite the busy festival atmosphere, it wasn't packed elbow-to-elbow, so I could still get a good view of the Kagura dance inside the shrine, and enjoy the market at the entrance at my own pace. The procession between the shrine and the festival events at the harbor were easy to see. Mostly locals take part, so I enjoyed the easy-going way of life they had there. Good for a very authentic experience off the beaten path.

Authentic Japanese style shrine with interesting Japanese wooden architecture work. Ambience similar sacred. Very good Japnese snacks around the shrine. And very nice peer view too.

One of the quietest shrines you'll ever visit. Read more about my visit at http://hotfootrini.blogspot.jp/2015/05/mihonoseki-soul-of-traditional-japan.html

I've visited the village of Mihonoseki (which is part of the Matsue municipality) a number of times, and on each occasion have visited the Miho Shrine (美保神社) as well.

The main shrine building is a large impressive structure, with a captivating backdrop of forested mountainside.

The deity here is Ebisu. You can buy amulets and shrine goods within the grounds, and enjoy the harbour town while visiting here.

As it is located on the coast, make sure to wrap up warm if you're visiting in the winter, as the winds can be quite cold!

The Miho shrine was far from the JR station and should cost 750 Yen. Fortunately I had a 3 days ticket. As it was far, I think, there was a few visitors. The shrine was not really exceptional to travel far away.
