First the architecture of the museum in front of the lac is amazing. Inside permanent exhibition has very important western and japanese master piece as an enormous sculpture Victor Hugo by Rodin. You will find a gallery with great suite and black pictures from the artiste Teiko Shiotani. Twilight temporary exhibition gathers paintings from Impressionist european painters and japanese painters of the same century very beautifull and interesting to see the connexion between these two cultures. What ever the kind of art you like i really recommend to take 90 minutes to enjoy Shimane museum.

The architecture of the museum is impressive. Just the building itself is a work of art. They've created a massive space for admiring art work. It's also an ideal location to view the spectacular sunset each day

With a prime position overlooking the lake this large modern building is itself quite impressive, but the art on display is less than exciting. Perhaps when they have special exhibitions it would be worth a visit, but their eclectic collection housed in five rooms on the second floor left me a bit unimpressed although there were some lovely art works dotted here and there. A few works on the lawn outside didn't add much in my opinion.

I enjoyed Hokusai exhibition so much. Taking photograph was prohibited. First half of exhibition was ended, but the last half is just as good. Don't forget to go to observatory. Walking distance from JR station. It's along Lake shinji, afterwards you can stroll the trail next to museum.

We really enjoyed the permanent collection which has a good mix of Japanese Art plus art from around the world. This is also a good place to see the sunset from but we did not have luck with this as it was always overcast during our stay.
