About
The museum on the shores of Lake Shinji, which is designated as "100 Japanese Sunsets in Japan," is the largest museum in San-in. Collect excellent works of each field such as paintings, sculptures, crafts, photographs as permanent exhibitions. It is also acclaimed that a large number of paintings with the theme of “water” will be exhibited.

A very complete and inpressive museum to discover japanese art and the influence of western art from all kinds
Oct 2019 • Solo
First the architecture of the museum in front of the lac is amazing. Inside permanent exhibition has very important western and japanese master piece as an enormous sculpture Victor Hugo by Rodin. You will find a gallery with great suite and black pictures from the artiste Teiko Shiotani. Twilight temporary exhibition gathers paintings from Impressionist european painters and japanese painters of the same century very beautifull and interesting to see the connexion between these two cultures. What ever the kind of art you like i really recommend to take 90 minutes to enjoy Shimane museum.

A spacious museum with an excellent view of the lake - great for watching the sun set too
Apr 2019 • Solo
The architecture of the museum is impressive. Just the building itself is a work of art. They've created a massive space for admiring art work. It's also an ideal location to view the spectacular sunset each day

Disappointing waste of a building
Apr 2019 • Couples
With a prime position overlooking the lake this large modern building is itself quite impressive, but the art on display is less than exciting. Perhaps when they have special exhibitions it would be worth a visit, but their eclectic collection housed in five rooms on the second floor left me a bit unimpressed although there were some lovely art works dotted here and there.
A few works on the lawn outside didn't add much in my opinion.

Hokusai
Mar 2019 • Solo
I enjoyed Hokusai exhibition so much. Taking photograph was prohibited. First half of exhibition was ended, but the last half is just as good. Don't forget to go to observatory. Walking distance from JR station. It's along Lake shinji, afterwards you can stroll the trail next to museum.

Nice permanent collection
Jun 2018 • Couples
We really enjoyed the permanent collection which has a good mix of Japanese Art plus art from around the world. This is also a good place to see the sunset from but we did not have luck with this as it was always overcast during our stay.

Worth a visit
Jun 2018 • Solo
I visited for a little over an hour. The museum had a special exhibition which I did not see. I understand that not all of the collection is on display. I enjoyed much of what I saw, loved some items, was a little disturbed by one or two, was unmoved by others. To me that is what I would expect, so I recommend a visit. All the exhibits have at least a label in English so that helps in understanding.

Lovely sunset and installation arts
Jul 2017 • Friends
It is a great spot for sunset, you could the estimated sunset time on their website everyday, and the museum will only close 30 minutes after sunset, which is very thoughtful.

There are also a lot of interesting installation arts around the lake side, which is very worthy to visit. Highly recommended!

Does East meet West or what?

Shimane Art Museum has a wonderful building and some special Art and somehow it lacks coherence. Why this collection is shown, we couldn't fathom. It's free, that's a bonus.

Enjoyable outside and in!
May 2017 • Couples
The outdoor sculptures are playful and well placed to complement the stunning view. The indoor galleries have a lovely variety of artworks, ceramics and photography in a modern building. A most enjoyable afternoon.

A stunning building with a great collection
Nov 2016 • Couples
A beautiful building, by the lake, good for sunset visits. The museum has a great collection, but only a small amount is on show at any time, so rather a matter of luck. A lot of local work too, some indifferent, some stupendously good.
