Not only Kyoto, but we have a lots of nice historical resort in west Japan.
Shimane-Tottori area is 2.5 hours ride by super express train from Kyoto, where located in the cost of Japan sea.
There's a desert! (Tottori-desert)
There's a hot spring! (Tamazukuri-onsen)
There's an origin of all shrine where god of Yamato(=Japan) decented! (Izumo-taisya)
Go further west there's an old Silver mine (Iwami-ginzan, a world heritage) for another 2 hour train ride!

You can travel around these area within 3 day trip.
The major purpose of this trip for our family is to take a night train "Sunlise Izumo" when back to Tokyo.
3 year old boy was also enjoyed this trip, so visit with your family to visit ancient Japanese power spot!

Where staying overnight at one of the ryokan, visiting for a day visit to the onsen or foot baths, or just taking a stroll through Tamatsukuri Onsen district, this place has both a long history and beautiful scenery, making it def worth a visit!

I think the prettiest time of year to visit is Spring, during the cherry blossoms flowering season, however this season is very short so plan in advance!

There is an interesting festival held in late summer, where you can see local song and dance performed at night after the temperatures have dropped a bit.

The shrine at the top of the street is full of colour in Autumn.

But even in winter, the onsen are great for heating your body, and the local seasonal dishes served are second to none.

You can use the foot baths free of charge. There are a couple located right on the river shore, and another outside the 'YU-yu' centre. A daily onsen facility. You can also buy small towels here for 500yen in case you've forgotten yours!

Just had a reception and party in Tamasukuri onsen. The staff were wonderful, the food was fantastic. They really looked after us well. I felt completely pampered. the onsen was top notch too. This is a great place to visit for couples who want a relaxing romantic stay. the light show with an illuminated garden is hilarious and bizarre, a very japanese experience. Just brilliant.

Choose Tamatsukuri because my fd recommendations. Almost an hour driving from Izumo-Shi.

A bit disappointed as it’s just a rather small area with many hotels. I walked the area in the evening and morning. Took less than 20 mins to walk around in whole area.
There’re foot onsens next to the river.

Their onsen is good for skin. Bought famous soap which made by onsen water as souvenirs.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of onsen, but this onsen is very historical as well as provides a good walking courses. Therefore I recommend this onsen to the people who are not only interested in Onsen but also interested in the view around it. The walking courses around the Onsen is actually very nice, so you can relax even after Onsen. Also tourists can see the historical statues around the Onsen area, which makes the walking more enjoyable. This place is a bit far to walk from the central city, so I recommend to take a taxi.

A quaint onsen town with two shrines and a small onsen street with shops. Plenty of onsen roykans you can choose from! Lots of sakura trees near the "river" in the middle of the street.

The road leading to the onsen is quite beautiful in a way of rural area. It reminds me of school days. The onsen district comprises many cute statues with bridges. You can take a foot spa on some area along the canal- very romantic at night. And also when it is dark you may go out from your ryokan with yukata on and walk outside along the canal wearing a Japanese wooden slipper. Recommended for nature lovers.

I only spent an hour in this area, but it was beautiful, with the river running through the area and many old-style buildings. I visited the two free footbaths, which I really enjoyed. This area also has alot of hotels and onsens, but I didn't visit them.

It’s not too commercialized small town. Quality of hot spring is very nice. Skin is very soft and stay warm after dipping onsen for a while. Nice to walk around with yukata and geta make sure bring small towel for foot spring along the river.
