Stroll in Edo era houses

Nice to explore after a visit of the Castle!
There are some buses, but they only go around one way...

Very nice to see.

Small little area with shopping and shrines. Great to see and explore. We were there during the cherry blossom and it was beautiful.

Worth visiting the tea houses
Nov 2017 • Business
A stroll around the castle moat will take you to a collection of rather old houses, done in the early style but updated for convenience. Several are now tea houses or soba noodle shops, all set in very pleasant surroundings.

What a sereneness... yet another "Beautiful Japan"
Jun 2016 • Business
I visited Matsue this June, which is said to be part of the best season thereof for seeing around. The town itself was good, having the tranquil atmosphere of its own. Twilight hours at the riverbed or lakeside would prove to be "once-in-a-lifetime" experience for anybody, I believe.

Great architecture
Oct 2015
I am always amazed by the old architecture of ancient japan and how it survived for hundreds of years. Who wants to get a view on this architecture needs to pay this town a visit whilst in the area.

a journey to ancient Japan
Mar 2013 • Friends
If you walk around Matsue Castle, it is really impressive how many old buildings you can still see there. It feels a bit like in Kyoto, but there are not so many tourists. If you don't mind some missing English signs, you should really take your time to explore this beautiful city. The old wooden buildings are nicely restored, and you can feel the atmosphere of ancient Japan. Matsue Castle Town has also many rivers, ponds and canals, so you can enjoy the nature around these waterscapes. If you want to relax and feel like on a journey back to the past, this area is really worth a visit.

Sightseeing gem, like Kyoto but not flooded with tourists
Aug 2012
Matsue is a look in Japan's past, and like Kyoto and Kanazawa, is one of the few places that maintains a strong wagashi (traditional confectionery) culture with its tea ceremony culture. Also home to one of the few remaining original castles, and the whole town has interesting spots associated with its castle town use, or places Lafcadio Hearn visited and wrote about during the Meiji era. Lots of lakeside scenery and hot resorts. It's a little out of the way, but the payoff is that it's not overwhelmed with tourists, so you can enjoy classic Japan at your own pace.

Excellent Castle surroundings

There are many things to see and do in the castle area walkway, including bridges and moats, museums (the Tanabe Art Museum), the Meimei-an historic tea house and samurai residence (buke yashiki)
