Part indoor flower park that blooms all year round, part bird park. Foreigners get ~30% discount on ticket price, just show your passport. Admission becomes 1,080JPY, instead of 1,540JPY.
Park is located right outside Matsue Vogel Park Station, about 15-min ride on Ichibata Railways from Matsue Shinjiko-onsen Station.
After buying the ticket and entering the main area, you can see lots of bright, colorful flowers filling the area and hanging from the ceiling. You can walk the park in about an hour, just follow the marked path. There is a section where birds at an arms length away, walking and swimming right beside/in front of you, with no barriers.
Overall, enjoyed my visit to this place a lot more than I thought I would! I definitely recommend a visit. If you're visiting Matsue and Izumo Grand Shrine, you can visit the Vogel Park too, it's in between.

I have been here a couple of times.
It can get a varied reaction depending on the visitor.
I've seen people gasp in awe at the largest indoor green house which is choc-a-bloc full of begonias, to others who yawn through it. (pretty impressive in my opinion!)
I've seen some people wide-eyed with excitement when it came to holding a penguin on their lap and petting it (Yes, it was an adult! :P)
You can also do the same with a big floppy bunny (largest rabbit variety worldwide).
They also do a penguin parade about twice daily (i.e. penguins walk in procession along specific path wearing costumes).
You can have tropical birds perch on your arm and eat out of a small cup as you hold it for 100yen (I recommend this!!tis super!)
And then, maybe what this bird and flower park is most renowned for, its owl show.
In the show, the staff get a couple of different owls to fly through hoops, to cross the performance area thus sweeping low over the spectators, etc.
There is a plant specially pruned to the shape of a love heart. This makes for a romantic pic for couples etc. And ties in with Matsue (Izumo province)'s links to luck and fate in marriage etc.
There is a restaurant serving Izumo soba among other things.
Their is also Matcha & Wagashi (green tea and Japanese confectionery) as designed by Matsudaira Fumaiko, a former Lord of Matsue Castle who during his time there devoted his efforts to preserving and developing his style of the tea ceremony (chado) thus making Matsue one of Japan's three cities renowned for their wagashi (the other two being kyoto and kanazawa).
Souvenirs are also on sale near the entrance/exit.
Train station approx five minutes walk.
50% discount for overseas visitors.
Large waterfowl pond.
Moving walkway & Observatory deck (panoramic view) !!!

This is a highlight. Laid out really nicely and lots of flowers and birds to see. It takes about 25minutes on the train or $40AU from the station. The train only comes once an hour on Sunday's.

I visited this park in June. When I walked into the garden area I was in awe of the beautiful flowers! Then, we went to see the birds and other animals. My excitement quickly plummeted. I was so upset to see birds is tiny enclosures, much too small for their needs. I saw a beautiful hawks and falcons tied to a stump on the ground in its enclosure. These birds should be up high, not tethered to a one foot post in the ground. Parrots were plucking their feathers out because they were stressed by their environment. There were birds in metal cages that were barely large enough to enclose them. I was so disappointed. My guide even commented about the fact that these parks don't really concern themselves with the proper care of the animals. This park has the potential to be amazing. They need to start taking care of their birds properly, and give the animals enough space to move around naturally. I was quite sad when I left.

Ive been here a couple of times since this park is only one and a half hour away from my sisters house. The park is full of plants and flowers. Its a huge park so its better to wear comfortable shoes. They also have penguins and other bird species( you can feed the birds but you have to buy food). After a tiring walk there is also a self service restaurant inside the park.I also love their food. Its not first class type of food but its delicious enough. I also love the soft cream. Public transportation is not a problem because they have a train stop just outside the park.

I was expecting to go for flowers, but the birds certainly were the main attraction. I've been to plenty of zoos, but this was the widest variety of birds I had ever seen in one place, many of which I had never seen before. They all seemed very well taken care of and content. If you're going fast you can walk through the place in an hour, and the entire path is covered so you'll be fine in rain, but it's worth taking at least a few hours to enjoy. Sometimes there are stage performances inside the begonia pavilion. The train station is across the parking lot so it's easy to get to, but make sure you know the train schedule so you can wait inside the facilities if necessary. Also, don't forget to bring your passport or foreign resident card so you can get a discount--one of the many foreign visitor discounts available throughout Matsue.

See flowers from all over the world, the owl show, see the birds up close and feed them. I only wished we had more time.

I've never had a chance to see so many different birds in my life! And you're not always viewing them from afar. Here, you can walk amongst the wildlife, in a very memorable park.
I visited while working in Shimane, taken along with a group of 200 teenagers, and they were just as excited as me. Be prepared to walk, as Vogel Park is spread out over a sizable landscape. You will also have a chance to visit an outlook, which will give you some great views of the land. The penguins are the #1 attraction here, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy the rest of the park. Check out my picture with a toucan!!! All of the display signs are in English, so you won't have to guess what is what if you aren't down with Japanese.
I also tried some very good Izumo soba here. It's a cold noodle, a bit salty, but a great meal when the humidity is high. This is without a doubt, one of my most memorable visits during my time in Shimane. Hopefully, you'll enjoy it, too.

If you are visiting Shimane Prefecture in Japan, Vogel park is a must see place. The variety of flowers within the greenhouses match every type of flowers you can see under different temperatures. The Birds are also a star attraction. Allowing them to perch on your hand and feeding them is a unforgettable experience.

This park which is very well laid out and much larger than expected has both plants & birds to see. Like most attractions in Japan it's spotless and well organised. The birds were good as was the owl show, and I'm sure kids would love both, but for my group it was the greenhouse that was the star of the show.
We visited on a very cold day when it was snowing and walked through the door to be confronted by a huge conservatory (supposedly the biggest in the world) full of blooming begonias & fuschias. I can think of no better word than spectacular to decribe the colours and size of the flowers and plants - it really defies description !!
If you're in Matsue & like plants flowers, it's really worth seeing. You need to take a bus from Matsue station, then a small local train to the park - about 40 minutes if you time it correctly - only other option is about $60.00 taxi fare. The tourist info centre at the station will give you timetables.

When it will stop demeaning/abusing animals, making them wear costumes as a sick attraction????
Written December 18, 2016
Do the animals wear costumes for holidays? If so, I'll just visit the meat section of the grocery store if I want to see living creatures degraded, humiliated, and tortured.

In Japan you are expected to carry a hand towel with you. They can be easily found in 100 yen stores.
