It is a tourist information, which is located on the 1st floor of JR Okayama station, or Ichibangai shopping area. General tourist information about Okaya is available, and there are pamphlets in English.

We can get many types of panflets not only Okayama city but also Okayama prefecture. Many information will teach us much more details of each place. It is very good information source for additional inter-net.

They saw that I was struggling and directed me to some useful English language brochures and maps. Then they answered my questions about things I needed. Well done.

Knowledgeable Staff with Up to Date Information
Apr 2019 • Solo

I actually did not discover this tourist information center until a couple of days in Okayama, because there was another smaller one at a more prominent location inside the JR station. While the staff there was helpful, it seemed Okayama would have a bigger tourist information center with more information on display.

So I looked online and found there was one - Momotaro Tourist Center. It is a little more hidden, on one end of the maze-like station. But there were signs in the station to help me find it.

The space was comfortable, with a desk where travelers can sit and browse through the pamphlets and maps, a very thoughtful detail. There was also free wifi.

(Just wanted to mention they have the "real" momotaro story, not the peach boy but the person supposedly the peach boy story was based on, in picture book form in Japanese, English, and Chinese - free (didn't pay attention to see if there were other languages). What was even nicer (for me as a backpacker who tries to travel light but love books) was that they offer PDF files that you can download from the Tourist Center website.)

The bulk of the printed information I was interested in was in Japanese, but don't let that stop you from going there for information. The real treasure trove of information is the staff there! Very helpful and extremely knowledgeable.

Because I stayed near the Okayama JR station, I went back to the Tourist Center almost daily to plan my travel for the next day.

The person I interacted mostly with (in English) was a nice lady named Naomi. Besides being knowledgeable, the information she offered was also really up-to-date.

Knowledgeable: I tend to ask a lot of questions that go beyond what a tourist may ask. She was able to answer all my questions not only about where to go, but about historical names, Japanese pronunciation rules, where to find food and how to do things efficiently. Knowing I only had a few days in Okayama and after hearing the list of local sweets I wanted to try, she suggested a place with a dessert that had the combination of the sweets I was interested in, to kill two birds with one stone. She really listened.

Up-to-Date: From her recommendations it was clear she not only pays attention to where restaurants/stores are but also what is new or recent or in season on the menu. I discovered a cute international food court as a result of her restaurant recommendation (in an area I would have never discovered myself otherwise).

Another thing about listening and answer questions: I was trying to decide between doing a more distant hike on the Momotaro line or a day trips to another city nearby while my JR pass was still valid. Either way I wanted to discover something more local than touristy. Naomi listened to my preferences, asked a few questions about where I had visited already, and offered detailed and practical suggestion on pace and feasibility of the places she thought I might enjoy.

Because the hike would require either hiking shoes I didn't have or a taxi to take me there (but as a solo traveler the cost was a little steep), I chose to go to a small town (Takahashi) about an hour away on the train, and just walked around enjoying the quieter surroundings - but also discovered a really cool community library, some interesting temples/shrines, small historical streets, and a local version of the okonomiyaki using the local tomato. It was exactly what I was looking for. Small local discoveries that are not in travel books.

Thanks to the staff (especially Naomi) at Momotaro Tourist Center, I was able to discover more Okayama and its surrounding area than expected. As a matter of fact I now have a few new places and activities I want to return to Okayama and explore in the future.

Great resources in many languages

This tourist center was in the main train station. They had resources in many languages (English, Chinese, Thai, French, and others!) We were able to get maps and brochures and the staff were very helpful in making recommendations as well.

Excellent service
Mar 2017 • Business
The Tourist Information office in the station sent us here, not because we couldn't deal with them in Japanese but because we were foreigners. Foreigners have to go to Momotaro, about 300 metres away in the underground mall.

It was after 6 pm. It was raining. We hadn't planned to stay in Okayama but now we needed to. They were happy to oblige.

They had a list of hotels with rooms available that evening and were about to call one of them. We mentioned one we had stayed at before. They called them and in less then 5 minutes after we entered the Momotaro office, we were booked in. Yes, we could take our time getting there if we wanted to eat along the way.

Great service. Friendly, too. Apparently available in several different languages.
