A small museum with pleasant surprises!

The Yumeji Art Museum is located right across the bridge from the Korayuen (North Gate / parking lot), around 5 minutes of walking on foot.

The museum is dedicated to the Japanese artist Yumeji Takehisa and displays his work from the Museum's collection. The exhibition space is small and about 40 pieces of work are displayed. During my visit, a variety of his work were display: oil, ink on paper, print, ink on paper screen, advertising poster etc. The highlight of the show was the recently restored "Nishikaigan no rafu" (Naked lady of the Western shore would be my translation). An amazing oil painting that captivated my eyes for a good ten minutes.

I did not know about Yumeji Takehisa before visiting this Museum, and I am very glad I took the time to visit. He is an extremely versatile, cross mediums artist but all his work consistently reveals a sensitive approach to depicting women and their modern lives. I spent 45 minutes in the museum and found that to be the right amount of time for me to learn about the artist.

There is a cafe and a gift shop in the museum. Parking is available. Like most museums in Japan, photography is prohibited. All materials are in Japanese except a general Museum leaflet in English.

Small, but perfectly formed

Yumeji Art is right next to Korakuen...I combined the two and saved a few hundred yen on the ticket price.

The art here is just lovely...lots of ladies in wistful poses...no signage in English, but they will give you some things to read in English. I just enjoyed taking it all in...didn't really miss the explanations. There is also another site with even more exquisite pieces. ..you can get there by bus. The ladies will give you instructions.

Well known artist. I like his style of work. You can often find examples of his work when researching Japanese art. He is a master at depicting Beautiful women in Kimono.
