The Myooin Temple is just outside Fukuyama by a couple of minutes, it is really easy to get to and there is parking available. We parked and walked the stairs to the temple. The temple is beautiful especially the pagoda. I loved the red colors of both the pagoda and temple, I went on an especially beautiful day when the sky was blue. I came here in the evening and had it to myself. There were a few trails around here I did not walk, but might be worth exploring more. I highly recommend adding the Myooin Temple to your Fukuyama itinerary.

Said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi, the main hall is an eclectic style that combines Japanese style overall with Chinese style in the details, and is the oldest surviving building of this style. The five-story pagoda is a beautiful tower that is the fifth oldest of all national treasure pagodas in Japan, and is designated as a national treasure along with the main hall. (From the website)

I can’t state enough how sick I was this day. Withdrawing from antidepressants and pain medication as well as generally unwell however it was Lauren’s birthday so I soldiered on through my ‘man flu’ and headed to Myooin Castle. Once arriving we saw roads upon roads with streetside vendors serving everything from fried mozzarella corn dogs on a stick to straight beer. We had to queue to get to the temple were I was told by my more cultured wife we would ring a bell, say a prayer to the Japanese God fellas and then go and receive our yearly fortune. Now these fortunes are written in an older dialect and Google translation was no help at all. It made no sense. The problem you see was your supposed to tie your fortune to a tree if it’s a bad fortune but we couldn’t tell we just kept them.
After that debacle we decided to go up a random staircase into the monk’s forest. We climbed up and up and up and up. It was magnificent. The serenity made me feel well for a moment, the exercise giving me much needed endorphins. Not a soul in sight and tranquility less than 200m away from chaos. Amazing.
Eventually we reached a peak which was a viewing area in which one could take in the whole panoramic vista of Fukuyama all the way out to the Setouchi inland sea. It was well worth the climb. The best thing was we found it by pure chance. A good fortune perhaps?
