In one unusual hot morning, we were climbing up a kind of a castle hill in a port town, Tomo. The port is located just in the middle of the Seto Inland Sea. Before the modernization, we used to utilize tide currents to power our trading boats and ships. On the rising tide, sea water comes into the Seto Inland Sea through the Akashi and Naruto Straits from the East and through the Kanmon and Bungo Straits from the West. The tide currents meat in the middle of the Seto Inland Sea in front of Tomo Port. On the ebb, the tide currents reverse their courses. Those days, we had to wait the next tide current in the port either we were going from Kyushu to Kyoto, or vice versa.
