Lovely and Scenic Village
Sep 2020
I stopped in Tomonoura before venturing on toward Fukuyama. I fell in love with this town, it might be one of my favorite small villages in Japan. Driving was a little intense as the streets were small alley ways but there is parking within town. Walking around town was lovely, it was peaceful and authentic. Walk the street on the outer side of town, you get amazing views of the sea and nearby islands. There are quite a few temples in town worth seeing, but I just recommend walking around for an hour or so just to enjoy this quaint little village.

Sleepy Town
Dec 2019 • Family
There’s really nothing much here for tourists. Similar to taking a trip to the outer islands in HK. But there’s no restaurants here, only coffee houses.

Charming sleepy port town
Oct 2019 • Couples
Easy walk about and enchanting old world charm with this port town of Tomonoura. Well-preserved for more than a thousand years. Amazing.
All shops have a history to tell. Architecture is most interesting. Business close by 5pm though. Catch the ferry by 640pm if you’d like to get across to Sensuijima island which is a 5-min ride away.
Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki definitely made a right choice with this place as the inspiration behind animation film Ponyo!

白壁の倉庫風の、竜馬資料館もよいのですが、できれば、走島行きフェリー乗り場のさらに奥へ進んでみてください。そこから、灯篭の方角を見るのがおすすめ。反対側も海で、
満足感があることでしょう。

worth to visit. please enjoy from the hashiri jima ferry boading bridge .its the most beautifl view spot.

We did a day trip to Tomonoura to go Kayaking. Interesting town with lots of shrines which we walked around. Had a great lunch at the cafe out on the point.

Seaside town in Fukuyama
Apr 2019 • Couples
Tomo no ura is probably a place to visit if you have lots of spare time in between. It's a seaside town near to fukuyama city which can be access by a local bus(approximately 30mins) at the bus station in front of the JR station. We went to a few areas in the hiroshima region and this is probably one of the least impressive. I would suggest making trip to onomichi instead if u have limited time. However we had fun exploring the little town which can be done in 2hrs or less as its a really small place and most shops are close.

Port Town
Feb 2019 • Friends
Tomonoura is a small port town at Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is a very quiet place on my think. We walked through the coastal roads, also with the old street roads. We also see the lighthouse near the coastal side road and see some Japanese sake shops. If you are passing very rush time in your life then I think to visit Tomonoura, pass some lazy times there. I think you feel better than before. I am also known from the guide this place became popular with the Japanese animation film named, "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea", which is directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Tomo no ‘Ura fool if you don’t go’
Dec 2018 • Family
Brilliant, absolutely ruddy bloody brilliant. Loved every second of a day out to Tomonoura with my missus, my new young baby and his aunt who’s come to visit.
Here are some things YOU MUST DO:

1:Go to every Yomeishu brewery (4 in total) Yomeishu (Traditionally spiced herbal Sake that you can get NO WHERE ELSE in Japan and is exquisite) will be given freely in liberal samples and is so cheap for how delicious and alcoholic it it!

2:Take the old traditional Japanese boat that’s been converted into a ferry over to Sensui island and once there (if you visit in summer) have a lovely swim on the beach on the Northside of the island. You can camp on the island too.

3: Try ‘Sea salt flavoured soft serve and Sea salt flavoured candy’ Trust me- absolutely delicious despite sounding odd. Like salted caramel for people with a moderate sweet tooth.
Do not, and I repeat, do not be tempted to sample ‘Sardine flavoured ice cream on the mainland’- it is disgusting and the taste will stay in your mouth for days.

4:Take in Tomonoura in all its wonderful historic charm. Just chill. It’s a great place.

It costs ¥520 if you catch the bus from platform 5 at the main Fukuyama-shi bus station per adult and take about 25 minutes to get there (and the same amount and time back). Buses run every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 40 on weekends and public holidays.

Tomonoura is fantastic. Get smashed on sake and have a great time with the fam!

The stage of the Ghibli movie "Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea"
Sep 2018 • Friends
We took the half day course which started around 2 and we ended around 5 pm. Despite the long kayak, it was like a breeze to go through since the guide was really friendly. He showed us spots that you probably won't end up searching for when visiting Hiroshima. Also gave us snacks and water to drink after a long day, 10/10. Not to mention, the Anime "Ponyo" was based on the place Kayakers Cafe is located in.

Rustic Fishing Town
Sep 2018 • Business
If you like quiet and rustic places, you should head for Tomonoura. It is a 30min bus ride from Fukuyama Station bus centre. Alight at the Tomonoura bus stop where there is a Tourist Visitors Center in the souvenir shop. You could get all the info required and guidance about walking and seeing the places of interest from this centre.

It is a small town and you could walk along the coastal road to these places of interest. Residents here are very friendly and welcoming. Most visitors here are local tourists. Hardly any foreign tourists!

Our visit was cut short due to the Typhoon Trami warning in the late afternoon as we have to make it back to Hiroshima via Fukuyama. Understand Fukuyama suffered some damages due to the typhoon the next morning.

Highly recommended.
