An excellent place to visit

The temple can not be reached by public transportation alone and you would a car ride for approximately 10 mins but don’t let that discourage you from exploring this amazing place . The temple has amazing scenery and every shot can be used as a postal card . In addition , you can try the udon used by monks using their equipment and following the same system . This is a museum dedicated to art related to the Zen sect inside and it is kinda insightful . You can try the Zen meditation if you arranged it before and it is wonderful thing to try for foreign people ad myself .
Don’t miss going to this amazing place .

Very interesting and unique temple with many exciting activities

This temple must be one of the most unique temples in Japan, certainly for me, it was the most unique temple I have come across in Japan. It has many different activities (tea ceremony, onsen, zen garden, several temples, traditional udon, zen experiences and even a strange but amazing water-based theatre experiences that is quite difficult to describe. Overall it a great place to visit and can easily be a whole day trip if you do all the activities.

Zazen Experience & Beautiful Garden
Feb 2019 • Friends
This Shinshoji temple surrounded by gardens with beautiful scenarios. This place is also famous for zazen (Japanese mediation) experience. We visited Hakuin's art museum (SHOUGONDO) which is full of different paintings and calligraphies by Zen Master Hakuin. There are a small fountain and pond surrounded by pine trees & autumn leaves after the information center ('Shodo'). We also enjoyed Udon noodles in our lunch with very long and thick big chopsticks. This chopstick is very long from in general chopsticks. We also met with a German Monk who is giving zazen training for 18 years in this Zen temple. He explained a lot of things about the history of the Zen temple. We also took 20 minutes of Zen experience from him in the meditation. There is a tea house for Japanese sweets & tea. The set of tea and sweets are called 'Sencha'. I enjoyed a set of Sencha with an old thatched roof building by sitting over there. This temple garden area is very beautiful by nature. The best part for me is the Zen experience and scenery of the temple area with a small bridge.

One of the most unique places in Japan
Nov 2018 • Solo
This place is dedicated to a concept - to bring the full zen experience to the visitor. From the strolling garden to the amazing Udon lunch experience, to the Hakuin gallery and the amazing Onsen on site - this place is a must for people who have an interest in zen, art and off the beaten track gems. A bit of a hassle to get there but on weekdays they operate a free shuttle from Fukuyama station.

One of the best experiences you can have in Japan
May 2018 • Solo
There are not enough words to explain the experience of visiting this temple. Its architecture, art, gardens, museum, Udon, public bath.....I spent 3.5 hrs all by myself just taking it all in and I didn't even have time to sit and relax- Id have to go back for that.
Kohtei is remarkable- truly a unique installation and inside a zen temple! the Onsen is sooo beautiful and worth the dip, the Udon noodles, which uncle explanations about how to eat them like the monks are delicious, the little museum is so well made. I could go on and on...in short do not miss it in the area. but do plan to spend some time there and arriving by car is recommended.
