The park is a tropical setting with palm trees and blue pools. It's located directly on the Pacific Ocean and offers easy entry for scuba diving. The staff and fellow divers were all helpful and pleasant to speak with. A very cool experience is buying a laminated postcard then diving to a depth of about 19 meters and dropping it into the post box. It will actually get delivered!
It's a great place to get away from the bustle of Tokyo for a day or weekend trip.
It's not walking distance from the nearest train station, but taxis are available. A car would be the best option especially with dive gear.

Went there with a group. There must have been 200+ divers at the park that weekend, it gets crowded at time. Rocky outcropping down to 18m then a flat sandy bottom at 25-30m. I had more fun going slow in the shallower rocks looking for crabs, frogfish, moray eels, etc.
Transportation: there is a slow local train from Atami that takes about 30 minutes. This puts IOP at 1:15 away from Tokyo Station and very much in the possibility of a day trip if you don't mind leaving early and getting home late.
There is a system of permanent ropes for navigation, so it's very hard to get lost in the park. The entry is concrete with some larger rocks and sometimes it gets difficult to walk into the surf because the surface is slippery. Otherwise, it's as safe as a dive site can get.
There is one napoleon wrasse hanging out that gets lots of photographs.
The shore has bathrooms and showers and onsen tubs. Think before you use them, heating up your body could add to decompression problems. However, a warm bath after the cold ocean does feel nice.
There are some pools for confined water dives. I didn't see anybody using them. However, with the entry and rocky shallows I wouldn't want to do confined-water dives in the open ocean at the park.
Don't forget to go to the gift shop and get a postcard laminated to mail to your friends at home. There is an underwater mailbox on the sandy bottom for you to put them in.

Thanks for you report.
We hope you can come back again to dive with us. To avoid crowded days we recommend to dive on weekdays. Weekends and holidays specially on summer season it is pretty crowded.
The pool is available to use and pratice confined water. We have two pools available 50m length and 4m depth pool. Fell free to use them next time.
You are right about warm up between the dives on "hotprings", that´s why we recommend just warm up enough to recovery the body heat and don´t fell cold. A few minutes its enought. Lose to much heat underwater can be cause for decompression problems too.
Your report create a very good image from our dive site. Thank you! We hope to see you soon!

My girlfriend and myself had a great day with Izu Oceanic Park, we did two dives with Otávio at Yokobama dive site as the I.O.P dive site was close due to the bad weather. Otávio picked us up from the train station, they had our equipment ready at our arrival, they offer us to order some food to have lunch between dives[oishii]. The dives with Otávio were amazing, he show us all the marine life and also we had some fun trying to make air rings under the water at the end of the dive.
We highly recommend it.

I took a short day trip from Ito (a sleepy town a few hours away from Tokyo) to I.O.P to squeeze in some diving. Otavio (the dive guide) made arranging the trip completely painless, from the first enquiry email sent, to when I had to inform him I would be late, due to a missed train connection. I.O.P's facilities were very good, with clean toilets and showers (clean towels and toiletries provided too!) and plenty of water to hydrate yourself between dives. We did two shore dives, and I felt completely safe with him Otavio, with instructions and the safety briefing clearly communicated in excellent English. Otavio was very familiar with the area, and knew exactly where to look to (hopefully) find what you wanted to see. I would definitely recommend this place to those who do not usually associate Japan with good diving.

When you are thinking of dive destinations Shizuoka, Japan may not be the first place that comes to mind, but think again. I had the privilege of diving Izu Oceanic Park Jogasaki Miharashi Garden just the 1st of May 2018. The visibility, underwater seascape, fish and coral life and most of all, my guide Otavio Munefica, were all a world class experience. He is a great communicator and helped me plan not only my dives but my travel getting to the park and back to the train station. Besides Otavio’s superb dive master skills, he has an intimate knowledge of the marine environment; he speaks 3 languages that I know of and genuinely loves and cares about what he does.
The facilities at Izu Ocean Park are also top notch. It is well stocked with quality gear, although I do recommend that you bring your own wet or dry suite if you are a western. The cut of Japanese suites are not what you may use to from a western feel. Other than that all the equipment is high quality, clean, update and well maintained. And, of course they provide Nitrox and computers. If you are doing multiple dives there is a very nice sized hot top to warm up in-between dives. After your dive they provide you with nice shower kit, shampoo, conditioner, soap and towels and foot wear!
If you are the only diver in your family, the park offers beautiful scenery above as well as below, ranging from gardens to a light house; to keep you’re the rest of your party occupied while you enjoy the park from below.
I simply cannot say enough great things about Otavio and my entire experience at Izu Oceanic Park. If you have the chance to go, please take it. You will not be disappointed.

Went for a dive here on 6th April without any prior knowledge of diving in Japan - I was very surprised and how great my experience was! The dive center is very well developed and has great equipment for cold water diving. The dive spots available from a shore submersion are incredibly varied and I saw lots of large marine life and some unusual creatures including a giant sheepshead wrasse! Visibility was also very good.
Finally the instructor Otavio was great and very experienced and knowledgeable about diving in the area. He made the fun dives really interesting and enjoyable and took some great photos!
Highly recommend this dive center if you are in Izu Peninsular!

My boyfriend and I signed up for the try dive while we were on vacation in Izu, and it really made our trip! The diving instructor Otavio kindly picked us up from our hotel and took us to the dive center, and even drove us to the station afterwards to start our trip home. We went on a Monday, which I recommend as it was not busy on the coast at all and probably allowed us to see more sea life.
The training was thorough but quick enough that it didn't take away from our diving time, and Otavio was fun and knowledgeable. It was the first time I've ever done scuba diving, and I probably embarrassed myself but I was still able to fully enjoy diving and taking in all of the beautiful ocean floor!
The diving center provides everything you need for your try dive, and there are facilities to keep you comfortable and having fun both before and after your dive (vending machines, showers, hot bath, etc.). IOP really goes the extra mile to make your experience something you'll never forget and I'm so happy we chose to end our trip to Izu under the sea. I hope to make it back to IOP someday, just one dive inspired me to go diving again as soon as I get the chance. I just hope next time I see a shark!

The place is absolutely great, we were there on a sunny day and the ice cream vending machine was a life saver ! There is also a hot bath to put on / take out your swinsuit easily, and it's super super nice to soak in hot water after spending one hour under water. Otavio, the diving instructor was really friendly and thorough in his explanations, and super accomodable : he ordered us a lunch that we had all together on the picnic tables, after the training and before the dive. Also, he takes pictures during the dive (of us and the fishes), and it didn't take him more than 24 hours to send them to me, I really was impressed. We booked one fun dive and one try dive but in the end we didn't do all the dives of the fun dive as my friend didn't feel so good, and we just paid for what we actually did. Also, inside the water is just great ! Lots of fishes, a few beautiful murens .. It kinda felt like we fell inside the tank of an aquarium, the impression on ocean's immensity added ! I'm totally thinking about coming back to get my PADI so that I can dive deeper, I'm hooked on diving and the place is just great !

1 How far is this from the cruise port of Shimuzu?
2 I will be coming into the port of Shimizu in April and will have about 6 hours there.
3 I would like to try to dive there in the morning and be back on board ship for 1pm.
Is there anything you can recommend?
