Mount Omuroyama is a beautiful scoria cone that was formed about 4000 years ago and has a shape like a giant pudding.
After enjoying a six-minute aerial stroll on the mountain lift (1,000 yen round trip) to the summit at an altitude of 580m, we walked around the crater rim for about one kilometer on the left side, enjoying a 360° panorama. (The ride took about 25 minutes.)
It was cloudy that day, so unfortunately we couldn't see the islands.
There was an archery range at the remains of the crater.
Commemorative photos taken during the lift ride were available for purchase at the Omuroyama Dango Honpo store at the summit.

If you have time while traveling to Izu-kogen, I'd recommend you to see this mountain!
We came there by bus, it took is around 40 minutes from Ito station.
The mountain has a lift that will deliver you to the top. You can spend time there by walking around the top of the mountain, which takes 20 minutes. You can have drinks and meal there as well.

This is a great site for views of the Izu Peninsula and if you are lucky Mt Fuji. It located about an hour and a half drive south of Hakone Gora. There is an open chairlift up to the summit which stands at 580 metres. There is a nice one way path around the summit and there are a couple of small shrines and great views. The valley in the middle houses an archery range but it was not open when we visited because there was a forecast for unsettled weather. There are a couple of small shops at the top but food and drink options are limited however there are a number of shops and eateries at the bottom of the chairlift. The chairlift has an automatic photo which for 1200 yen is a nice touch.

I once visited Mount Omuro in the summer. The green hillside looked like a big matcha pudding from a distance. During this winter visit, Omuroyama, without its green vitality, was more like a caramel pudding standing on the Izu Peninsula. You can easily reach the top of the mountain by taking a cable car, and you can walk around on the top of the mountain without much physical effort. This trip happened to be met with heavy wind and rain, so we had no choice but to climb a few steps.

Not a particularly tall mountain, but its location means you get a heck of a view from the top. The ability to circle around the summit means you not only get a heck of a view, you get a heck of a 360deg view, especially on a clear day. Ito itself is also not a crazy tourist destination, so the crowds are also very reasonable.

This spot offers a panoramic view of the volcano's crater. It's the perfect place to contemplate the origins of the Earth. You can't climb to the summit on your own, so you must take the lift. The same goes for descending. At the summit, there is a promenade that circles the crater's mouth, making for a pleasant stroll. Of course, the views of Izu Kogen and the surrounding area are also wonderful. Unfortunately, the crater appears to be used as a practice area for archery, so tourists are not allowed to enter.

The summit of Mt. Omuro is 580 meters above sea level but since it is a volcanic dome created by the eruption 4,000 years ago, unblocking views from the mountain is just spectacular. Crater rim walk takes only about 20 minutes and you can enjoy archery on the basin of its crater bowl. From the east side of the mountain you can grasp the topography of Izu highlands created by lava flows thousands of years back. And if the weather is clear enough you can view Mt. Fuji and Izu islands(particularly that of Oshima Island is great). From the highest point which is the other side from the rift station, you can have the view of Amagi Mountain range.

From Izukogen JR station, take public bus #1 to Mt Omuro. It is about a 20 mins ride. You get a ticket from the bus, and on alighting, you pay to the bus conductor.

I ended up in this area because I was chasing hanami & didn't have time to return late March or early April. The tourist office recommended me to see Mt Omuro. The cherry blosooms were all over at the station of Izukogen station. Beautiful!!

Hot tip:
The local bus travel in very pricey!!
If you plan to tour around the area, buy the day pass at JPY1000 - it's worth every dime. You don't have to juggle with coins and if you get lost like me, you can easily hop onto another bus in the area. I didn't get the pass & ended up paying a lot more than JPY1000.

I took the roundtrip ski-ride to the top for JPY500. It's worth it. While I was not really impressed with the mountain (as well travelled as i am), I enjoyed the view of the Sagami-Nada sea and the expanse of the valley.

I took the walk around the well-paved circular path on the mountain top, albeit the strong chilly wind. Please come properly dressed.

The air was fresh & and view was spectacular. Mostly all, I overcome my fear of that ski-lift and heard church bells ringing across the valley!

Going back, I took the wrong bus & ended at at Ito (instead of Izukogen).
It was an adventure.

Situated in Ito Japan, this is a gem hidden whereby not so crowded with visitors. We had enjoyable day at the top and walking around the ring of the valconoes. Morning would be the best time to visit to avoid the hot sun in the month of May.

The weather was pretty overcast, and it was a lot colder at the top than at the bottom of the mountain (obviously), and my ears didn't pop (not that I'm blaming the mountain for that!) but still, it was fairly enjoyable and worth having a walk around the crater.

My dad had brought some binoculars with him. Good idea!
