I think this sprawling marketplace is a fun place to wander through in early morning just to see the myriad fresh fish. But I also enjoy looking at the produce, stopping in the bakery and checking out the coffee shop later in the day. A big supermarket-type store offers items, such as saki, rice and sweets. I found this to be a small market, compared to many I have visted in Asia, but it still oozes local color. Located near the ferry terminal, Pia Bandei was just a 5-minute walk from the Hotel Nikko, where I stayed.
Restaurants here also beckon with opportunities to eat inside or outside. I ate an outstanding lunch at Benkei, a conveyor-belt restaurant, where customers select dishes of sushi as the food passes by on the belt. I considered the sushi I ate at Benkei to be extraordinary in taste and freshness -- clearly in the top 5 percent of the sushi I have eaten in Japan during the past 33 years.
Pia Bandai is one of the stops on the Niigata city bus loop route. Those holding a daily bus loop pass do not receive any discounts here. But the bus map indicates that pass holders will receive a special gift at the information booth.

Pia Bandai is more than a pier that sells a wide variety of locally caught fresh fish, it also has a couple of grocery stores, a bakery, restaurants and a liquor store that sells high end whisky and sake. While most of the pia bandai products are for local consumers, there are items specifically set aside for tourists wanting to purchase Niigata gift products. If you want to purchase some quality Hibiki or Nikka whisky at a fair price, this is the place to go.

The seafood and liquor markets were great with a large variety of products. It was a great place to spend a morning and then have lunch there. Easy to get to on the loop bus.

Home to a fresh seafood, vegetable and meats supermarket as well as some container restaurants and eateries. Very laid back place with an outdoor tent eating area where you can do a bbq of the food you just bought at the market. Great place to unwind.

Only about 10min drive from Nigata station and it was fun. There are main super market selling fruits and local goodies. Rice crackers we bought was amazingly good. They do not take credit cards (except for restaurants), make sure you'll bring cash with you.

I got here just after 3pm and it's a shame on my part because everything in the fish market was tidying up.
However the meat & veg market was nice, full of local products. So at least I came away with souvenirs and a delicious onigiri

This place is a bit of a mix. Its got a couple of nice market sheds, one with a most impressive array of fresh fish and oddly at the back heaps of Japanese cakes and sweets, the other shed selling vegetables, meat and fruit. These sheds open up early. Then there are various other stalls, sheds, and containers selling coffee, food, snacks etc but they don't open until 10.00, or in most cases much later.... so if you are going head there for lunch or late afternoon I guess but by then the fish market may well not be so interesting..

We spent about 3 hours at Pia Bandai. We went on a week day, so, it was really easy to find a parking spot. We had coffee and sushi there. We walked around the wet market but did not buy anything. We got some small bites at the grocery store next to the wet market. The prices seemed reasonable. In sum, it's a very enjoyable experience.
