Very impressive rail experience

We took the Genbi Shinkansen from Ecohigo Yuzawa to Niigata, the train outside has beautiful outlook & very attractive. Inside the 6 cart train, each cart has different art pieces. The cafe offered coffee, drink & snack, also has the nice picture on the wall. A cart with rail toys for the children. The seats of all carts are the comfortable sofa. You can sit very relaxing to look the art pieces. Very good experience & enjoyable journey. Highly recommended to take.

"art" Shinkansen

The Genbi is a special version Shinkansen - black on the outside, vivid art themes inside. It runs mostly on weekends and is more expensive than the standard- basically, the more heavily- travelled the weekend usually is, the more expensive the Genbi is, just FYI. Book early, it's always full.

Should have better schedule

I'm sure I am not the only train freak on visits to Japan who just cannot get a single chance to travel on this train. Only weekends and holidays. The stretch it does is questionable, but well, it is a tourist/skiing stretch, I suppose. I finally made it, and the only disappointing thing is that it is too short of a trip.

Amazing Moving Art Gallery

I've always wanted to get on this unique shinkansen. Finally l was able to do so during my recent trip. As it only runs 4 trips on weekends and public holidays, you need a bit of planning in order to get on it. You need not pay extra if you use a JR pass. Each car is different on this shinkansen. One car is a cafe car, another one is a children play area. Reserved seats are available.
