Until seeing reviews, I thought these were just relics of old times left as art, then I had to go back and try some of the soft mountain water. Some streets also have water running down artistic drains.

As others have noted, there are many spots around Matsumoto where natural spring water bubbles to the surface and is available to drink. You'd pay for bottles of it in the shops! Most have long wooden handled spoons to drink from. The water is cold (or it was on the day we tried it). I took photos of Genchi Well,... More

There are a couple of walking courses around Matsumoto City where you can drink some of Matsumoto's delicious spring water. We enjoyed drinking from about 10 or 12 different wells during our stay in Matsumoto. Fun way to get kids to read a map, almost like a treasure hunt. Many of the maps are available in English. Recommended.

This building doesn't really look like a castle as we know it, the only clue being the moat around it. It is a magnificent building of 6 floors and has been so well maintained as it dates back to about the 1500's. You need to remove your shoes and put them in a plastic bag to carry to protect the... The different wells have nice designs and are scattered around the city. The most beautifull one is the Genchi well: special enough for a small detour.

Clear, clean & fresh drinking water. Lots of wells located around the city, with quirky pumps/tapes & information

During Obon the shops and streets were crowded…we took advantage of the wells to wash our face, hands and cool our tired feet.

The only regret we have while in Matsumoto was we forgot to bring along our drinking bottle. The water "outlets" dotted the streets and tasted great (I don't know why but I just love the smooth feel of the water) It will be nice to bottled the water ...

Matsumoto is a beautiful compact city made for walking. Along the way, one can see many different kinds of flowers on the streets and different outlets for spring water. One can spot many of these outlets all over the city. Enjoyed my walk around the city.
