After a very steep hike of about 7 hours from Kamikochi, you can reach the top of Yarigatake. There is an 'easy' route past the river, even this is not a trip for the inexperienced, due to the technical terrain. Carrying a bearbell is very advised. The 'advanced' route requires alpine skills and preferrably a rope and harnass. But the... More

A very doable summit if you don't mind climbing a few airy steel ladders and pulling on the odd chain. I recommend hiring a helmet from the hut below as rock fall from other climbers is probably your biggest danger...

The peak normally takes 2 days of hiking to reach from Kamikochi (which is about 2 hours by train + bus from the town of Matsumoto). The path is not difficult to follow but it requires good stamina. Hikers can stay in the mountain huts along the way which would also provide dinner and breakfast.

A classic in Japanese mountain circles know as "The Japanese Matterhorn". Can be done as a three day trip from Kamikochi base or even two if you like jogging up mountains. There will be queues for the ladders at Yarigadate-sanso mountain and upwards. Good chance to have a chat with the well prepared Japanese hikers and practice patience!

Not as attractive in my opinion as Tsurugidake at Murodo. But easier. The ladders are no problem. Huge Japanese crowds all along the trails from Kamikochi, at the huts and the campgrounds (do not even think at staying at the one just below the top) and the surface area at the top is small. My advice: don't go there at... More

The mountain is situated in the beautiful alps in the Nagano prefecture. I was there for a two day trip just to summit it(round trip), starting from the Kamikochi. Ridge traversing gives you a wonderful view of the mountain range, but I did it in September when the terrain is easy. Get a map from the mountain technical center before... More
