Norikura Kogen (Highland) is a large area spreading in the east of Mt. Norikura (3,026 m), which is the 10th highest mountain and one of the younger volcanoes in Japan. You can enjoy the magnificent views from Japan's highest highway (2,700m) over Mt. Norikura. There are also many viewpoints like water falls, flower gardens, and caldera lakes. Ushidome-ike is a beautiful pond, which gives you one of the best views of the mountains especially on a breathless morning or calm sunset. You can enjoy varous activities like hiking, biking, jogging, birdwatching or just a peaceful walk in nature. The annual "Tenku Marathon" and "All Japan Norikura Mountain Cycling Race" are held in June and August each year. In Winter, Mt. Norikura Ski Resort is a reknowned winter destination. The snow remains year round and some skiers enjoy skiing as late as August on Mt. Norikura. After walking or skiing, you can soak in Norikura Kogen Onsen (hot springs), which are famous for their white onsen water. Norikura is also famous for delicious soba noodles and other local mountain vegetables.

This was one of my favourite places in Japan. I decided to go last minute, taking the 30 minute train and 40 minute bus from Matsumoto up to the highlands. I stayed at Guesthouse Raicho, which was cheap with a awesome host, backpacking atmosphere and a private outdoor Onsen - a recommended place for those looking for a decent, basic... More

It was early spring and most trees were bare but I had a great day trudging through the snow (a little treacherous at times and sometimes difficult to make out the directions but the path through the snow was well-trodden) and saw only one other hiker all day. From the Norikura tourist centre (stop "Kanko center mae", not quite the... More

This area is very accessible as a day trip from Matsumoto every month of the year. Simple breakdown: Winter is for skiing and snowshoe adventures around the base of the volcano. Spring has some beautiful wild flowers and bus tours through walls of snow taller than the bus. Summer is everything else you've read elsewhere. And the best time for... More

From late Sep onwards, fall foliage would commence its descend from 2700m. Took the only shuttle bus to Tatami-daira (terminal) and started descending along the main road, alongside with many others doing the same, while from time to time, there were cyclists ascending ! Though the "fall" belt lies b/w 2300-2000m, there were pockets of foliage with vivid colours on... More

Not really interesting architecture. The time for a picture while walking the historic streets of Matsumoto, is enough. Not worth just to go for it.

You can accesss not your car but a shuttle bus. From "Fujimi-dake" (within 1hour walking), you will see the great landscape. You can see the Japan North Alps .HODAKA, YARIGATAKE etc. The wind temperatue was extreamly cold even if early Octber. Plese do not forget thick jacket and ear cover.

It takes a very long time to get there - many train and bus transfers - but it is very worth it. Love the onsen.

Norikura Kogen and Tatami-daira are great for hiking! I recommend visiting the Ichinose Meadow area at Norikura Kogen for the flowers and ponds. At Tatami-daira, hiking to the peaks (~3,000m) let you see amazing views of the lands below. Even though I went on a very rainy and foggy day, that 5 seconds that the fog cleared and revealed the...
