We walked up into the Utatsuyama area from Higashi Chaya and we are glad we did. It was very quiet and there is an observation area where you can see snow on the mountains. Our only issue was that we didn't have a very good map so couldn't find another way down - we came back the way we walked up. It is a peaceful area and you could explore more with a car.

Mt. Utatsu, or "Utatsuyama", is rumoured to be the highest point in Kanazawa. Apparently, no buildings are allowed to be built taller than Utatsuyama, but I was never able to confirm this (not that Kanazawa has many high-rises).

I used to live near here and it was my favourite area to get away from the "city". It's not very well lit in certain areas, despite being partially residential, so if you walk up. Most people come here by car, there are parking spaces available, but you may also walk up at your own pace. I usually cycled it.

There are a couple of stop overs to look over Kanazawa, though I would say it's difficult to spot major landmarks apart from the taller buildings. At the "peak", there is an observation deck that looks over Kanazawa towards The Sea of Japan. It's not a gobsmacking view, but the atmosphere up here is serene and tranquil. It's reasonably popular in the evening with couples as a romantic spot.

Like most places in Japan, it changes in the seasons so you can get something new from it with each visit. It's really nice to see the snowy mountain ranges from the observation deck in winter. It's also great on a clear night to stargaze and watch meteor showers.

If you have a capable bike (probably 8 gears or more) and a bit of a downhill enthusiast, I would recommend going up from higashichaya (The East Tea District), go up to the peak, then follow the road straight on to take you on to a series of downhill 180 degree bends. It reminds me of the manga, Initial D. Be careful of the abundance of insects in summer, though - they will splat against you!

It's free to go here, so it's definitely one you should consider (and if you fancy a bit of excercise).

We drove up by car, but except from some trails and a few temples Utatsu did not offer much. The vegetation along the road spoiled the view.

The walk up the hill is quite enjoyable with lovely views along the way and nice shrines to visit. If you want to take the bus back down make sure you don't go too late in the day as the last bus was in the late afternoon. Some parts of the walk are quite steep but overall it is fine even if you are not very fit. It is probably a good idea to grab some kind of map as we did occasionally find ourselves in an area with no footpath and hairpin bends in the road. I suspect a tourist map might have shown us a better route. Whilst their no shops along our route, this is Japan so there were vending machines to buy a drink along the way. This was a very green and pleasant area that I imagine would be enjoyable to explore on foot or by car or bike. I probably wouldn't try it on foot with little ones if you don't want to end up carrying them.

Please go on a sunny day otherwise it could be disappointing. We were there just before sunset and got a view of the entire city of Kanazawa. A real treat. Good place for visitors travelling to this city for the first time.

From the famous (and heavily visited) Higashi Chaya district, it is not too far of a walk up the hills to a series of parks and pathways with some nice surprises, hidden shrines and great views. You can walk down a pathway on the south side, through some interesting neighborhoods, and end up at the famous garden. Well worth the time and steps!

We accessed the Utatsuyama from the Higashi-chaya district. There are several ways (and lots of steps) to reach the shrines on the apex on which one is rewarded with a panoramic view of the city down below. There are lovely coves for those requiring pitstops, and charming bridges and red gates (tori).
Our walk took place during late-Fall when the grounds resembled a rich tapestry of lilacs and purples, yellows and golds, oranges and ochres, pink and reds-- such a peaceful place for reflection!
