- chowsoGloucester, United Kingdom1,745 contributionsLovely gardensThe castle grounds are very nicely maintained and are nice to walk through. We passed through on our way to Kenroku-en and again to get back to our hotel. The castle looked very nice and although it's a modern reconstruction, was in keeping with the traditional castles we saw in Japan. We came across a wonderful cherry blossom grove by chance, one of the best we saw in our whole trip, and it wasn't crowded like so many others.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 27, 2024
- Alison KMilford, Pennsylvania2,953 contributionsMagical cherry blossom illuminationVisited one night in early April to view the cherry blossom illumination. The castle and the garden views were stunning - we hit just the right time to see them. I got some really cool photos. There was a decent number of people, but it was still pretty magical.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2024
- ふれさん1,139 contributionsThere's no castle, but it's a fine castle. It is opposite Kenrokuen. It is a very large site with many entrances. It looks like you can go around from the tourist attractions in the area. It was destroyed by fire and Ishikawa-mon Gate and other gates remained. There are no castle towers left, but many stone walls remain and you can feel the castle from the outside. It is spectacular to see the light up with Kenrokuen every season. There are also gates and turrets that have been restored since it was developed as a park. There seems to be some paid tours, but admission is free and carefully maintained, and there is also a garden where you can enjoy cherry blossoms and autumn colors. There are currently some stone walls that have collapsed due to the earthquake and are closed to traffic. This time, I went from Kenrokuen to the promenade leading to Gyokusenin Maruguchi and visited Oyama Shrine and entered from Nezumimon Gate. I thought I would take a break and go through the park with the view to the Kuromonguchi area, but I gave up walking around the castle ruins park because I had to go up a long slope and my body didn't want to walk for half a day.Visited November 2024Traveled soloWritten November 26, 2024
- Wingfield73Chiang Mai, Thailand1,031 contributionsAn oasis of peaceAfter the bustle of the city centre, the castle and its surrounding free park, add a welcome feeling of relaxation. The gardens, and the castle too, are perfectly maintained, giving endless photo opportunities. Together with the neighbouring Kenrokuen Gardens the area offers a nearly full day of enjoymentVisited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 29, 2024

This castle was the residence of the Maeda Clan, a clan with a fiefdom of one million koku in the Kaga domain.
It is known as the "Stone Wall Museum" because of the impressive stone walls that can be seen from various eras.
The castle tower was burned down by lightning, but it is still magnificent and impressive!
It is listed as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles.

The Kanazawa Castle Park is quite big and can be accessed from several sides. We came by JR bus and entered through the main gates, opposite the Kenrokuen garden. Entry to the grounds is free, but some other areas are chargeable. When we visited in March, cherry blossoms were not in full bloom yet.

This castle is not big and it is not other castle that has plenty floors. The garden is huge and there is a pavillion with nice tea house and ceiling to floor glass that you can sit and admire the castle. In the castle park area there is an old garden and pond which was very famous called Gyokusen’inmaru Park, a nice pavillion to sit and enjoy the garden, very nice especially during winter time.

Multiple entrances to the park, but all eventually lead you to the Castle, which is now an armory. Didn't pay to go in there, just walked around outside and admired the restoration.
Nice coffee shop with lots of seating in the lobby -- with GREAT views of the castle and the place is air conditioned!! We took advantage of it on a warm summer day.
Helps to have a guide to explain the history, etc. Otherwise, read up before you come; there aren't many signs or brochures.

We were surprised there was no entry fee for this park area. It seems to go on forever. Lots of families enjoying the day and the scenery. Pretty cool coffee shop around the corner, too.

We came here in the dark as we wanted to get to Kenrokeun garden for the lighted show. But, we sort of got lost. But, the castle had its own lighted show, so we stuck around. The organizers used multi-colored lights to make the look magical.

Worth a stroll, but we have seen more appealing gardens in other Japanese cities. The castle makes for good photos.

It was good to see our the lords of old lived in this rebuilt castle.
We were allowed free entry from the staff after they requested to see our passports. The garden around the castle were marvellous.

Located some distance away from the Kanazawa Station. I took the JR bus from Kanazawa Station to reach here. The bus stops at the base of the Ishikawa Gate of the Castle Park, and is covered if you are using the JR Rail Pass (I am referring to the Japan-wide Rail Pass; not all passes are covered here, so please check!). The bus stop also happens to be the same one as for the famous Kenrokuen Garden; the latter is located opposite the castle park. The grounds are free for the most part for you to roam. Very spacious grounds and was more serene compared to Kenrokuen. I think the autumn colours really brought out the best in the place and provided some nice backdrops for photo-taking. I visited on 24th November 2018, which was when Kanazawa was reported to be at peak for autumn colours; putting it here so that you can gauge and plan your visit.

A very enjoyable visit, you get to understand what goes into building Japanese castles here. It was an amazing ruin.
