About
Hida Takayama has continued to hold it's tradition and culture for years. We are a "Kuramoto"(brewery), located in the corner of old street that stretches along the crystal clear stream of Miyagawa River, has kept the original building for almost 200years. We hope many visitors enjoy Funasaka's sake brewed by the traditional way as well as the unique way.

We had a great experience here and it was a fun entertaining . We purchased our Sake glasses at a kiosk for 100 yen apiece and they became souvenirs . Then you purchase special coins at another station and they cost 100 yen for each taste of Sake . The Sake is self serve tastings , pre measured out and you have over 20 different Sake to taste . Very cramped space though and very busy . We opted for 3 tastings and each was different and very good . The brewery itself was over 200 years old . There is a food market and gift shop as well . We didn’t see the restaurant but I do believe they have one . It was fun and the Sake was very good , so good we bought 3 bottles to bring home .

We were looking forward to sampling the sake.
The inbound tourists were competing with each other as they tried as many samples as possible.
You could exchange your money for coins to sample the sake.
You could get a sake cup for one coin.
You could take the sake home after drinking.
It would make a great souvenir.

I came here to do what the locals do - taste the Sake. I did not eat anything while here but managed to taste the different Sakes that were on offer. You pay a set price, get to taste the different sakes and get to keep your cup as a souvenir.
After a couple of tastes, you do need to have some water and definitely eat some food. Fortunately you can taste some and return later to taste the others - this is what I decided to do or I would have been way too drunk.
As mentioned I am not a Sake lover but I did walk away knowing that there was one that I preferred over the others.
I did try this with a group of friends and inter-acted with others there too. It was a fun experience.

Having tasted a few of the different sakes we then tried out the restaurant. We tried some of the sampler sets of sake- wonderfully set out and a brilliant experience to try the different flavours. Lovely food too - the tempura and beef stew were particularly good. Everything was so beautifully presented. It was the highlight of our day in takayama.

At the back of the brewery and sake shop, the property has a restaurant that serves hida beef in shabu shabu form, along with other side dishes, in set meals. I had the standard set meal for one person. The beef didn't take very long to cook at all, and it really was extremely tender and juicy. One bite and all that fat goodness came through, so it definitely lived up to the hida beef hype. The miso soup was nice and rich too. Even if you don't want to try the sake, the restaurant makes for a good lunch or dinner stop.

This sake brewing complex surrounds a nice courtyard that includes a tasting bar, store, and very pleasant restaurant specializing in Hida beef. 90 cl pours are very inexpensive and you can enjoy them in an interior bar area or the courtyard. The best place in old Takayama to sample sake.

Takayama already attract so many foreign people, and l myself visited there with my friends from Europe.

You will realise how difficult it is to make Sake at there. My guest enjoyed tasting various kind of a Japanese traditional alcohol.

Some people at the shop speaks English.
You may also have a chance to talk with brewery myster.

This is one of the few breweries on the street. Bought the wooden cups just for sake, actually ended up with four bottles for enjoyment back at the hotel. Sampling costs is chargeable just for info.

We enjoyed our tasting at the brewery very much, one of the best. Far better though was the meal in the attached restaurant Aji No Yohei which I can't find on Trip Advisor. Don't miss it if you're in Takayama.

I was walking through the old town looking for Masu for my wife; these are the cedar boxes that Coach Sushi in Oakland serves sake. The curio shop told me to go next door. Well to my surprise i ended up in this sake brewery. The salesperson was Swedish so we had a wonderful conversation in English. First he sold me the boxes. $3 each. Then he asked if id like taste...it was 9 am so why not. They were thimble fulls. But really delicious. Lots of fruity notes. Something i could enjoy and know my wife would. Problem i was traveling home with carry on so had no room to bring a bottle home. Well thank god for costco. My wife found a bottle tonight, about the same price. So win win. Enjoyed the brewery and have its sake .
