My husband and I were lucky enough to join the Standard Cycling tour with Satoyama Experience during our trip to Takayama. It was a great way to see the country and learn more about the area and the people that live there. Our guide, Hisa, was very knowledgeable and friendly. He also gave us tips about festivals in the area... More

Our tour with Tatsu was one of the highlights of our two weeks in Japan. We loved to opportunity to learn more about the region and witness the beauty of the countryside. We did the standard tour, and it was an easy paced ride with many breaks along the way to learn, enjoy freshly brewed tea, and fill our water... More

The cycle tour through the rice fields with Hisa as our guide was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. We booked the afternoon tour and although it was very hot (middle of August) we had a great day. On the way there was enough shade and wind. And because of Hisa we stopped at the right locations... A great morning for the family, with kids aged 8-13. Tatsu was a great guide, very considerate and knowledgable. We saw aspects of the town and countryside that would be impossible to see or understand as an outsider, a lovely half day. Highly recommended, but don't tell everyone...

We went on the shorter family bike ride. We saw both the village and the countryside. We stopped along the way and our excellent guide Hiro gave us short talks about farming and the local community along the way. We stopped and talked to a local farmer, had a nice tea break and refilled our water bottles from a mountain... More

We are a family of 4 including a 9 year old and a 13 year old and it can be a a challenge sometimes to find a sightseeing activity that appeals to the entire family but this certainly it. Hida is far less crowded than Takayama and it was wonderful to explore the Hida by bike. We were on the... More

Very very nice way to see Japan from another point of view, with a very personal touch of Shinji ! We would certainly go back for another ride in this wonderful countryside! Shinji took really very good care of our group, looking after each one of us, talking to everyone, watching if the road was safe to cross, ... A... More

We had a great morning biking in HIda with our excellent guide, who spoke very good English and answered all of our horticultural questions. An easy ride for the whole family!

By Michael Goro Takeuchi Kyoto may be consistently ranked as a top destination place by many publications, but in all honesty, it has nothing on the Hida area. Just over two hours away from Tokyo by Shinkansen, sits a beautiful area at the foot of the Japan Alps. And two local train stops away from Hida-Takayama (population around 92,000) in... More
