This is the first time we experienced a snowing mountain and we are definitely not disappointed. Mount Hotaka (I think that’s what it’s called) is the third highest mountain in Japan and I understand the double deck cable car up the mountain is the highest...More

At the first station of the entire Shinhotaka Ropeway, there is nothing much to bother noticing, other than a rather medium sized gift shop that sold various goods and popular prefectural items that are special to a certain prefecture. Anyway, the Gondola round-trip ticket for...More

The ropeway tickets cost 3000 yen but they're definitely worth it. The mountain views are lovely especially during the winter time. There's a small cafe too where you can get a nice cup of matcha. You can also go to an onsen or try the...More

If you are visiting Takayama & the Japan Alps it makes sense to go to the highest easily accessible spot: 7073ft/ 2156m at the top of Shinhotaka ropeway. Having said that it’s quite an effort to get there, involves a whole day trip & it’s...More

I guess others who start trekking from the peak of this ropeway may feel differently, but to me, you get the best scenery on the way to the top, but not at the top... I've been to quite a lot of ropeways in Japan, but...More

This is my 4 time to visit shinhotaka. Make sure you check the weather forecast before visiting. Look for the clear blue sky. Always visit at the morning. The view will clearly blow your mind. Do not forget to visit Hirayu onsen. The outside onsen...More

Given the time , effort and cost involved in getting to the top , some may feel disappointed while some may loved it . Definitely not if you are rushing for time , you need to allocate about 2-3 hr excluding getting to the base...More

I travelled from Takeyama to Shinhotaka. I had beed looking forward to visiting Shinhotaka but was not sure about undertaking the trip due to the weather in Takeyama. Buy the 3 day pass rather than purchasing bus and ropeway tickets individually as it is cheaper....More

Yes from bottom & back to bottom of ropeway itself. However it's a couple of hours each way from Takayama by bus & you may well have to queue. See my review 're other considerations.

You can get it the same day. However if you are going from Takayama, you could get a 3 day hop on hop off bus which includes coupons for exchanging the Ropeway rides, and some other coupons.
