The Shin-Hotaka Ropeway is one of Japan's most unique ropeways, with one of the largest elevation gains in the country. But its most distinguishing feature is its double-decker gondola cars, the first of their kind in Japan. I will never forget the crisp air up there, not to mention the breathtaking view of Okuhida.

I will say it is a MUST visit in that region. The view are so beautiful, and it is suitable for family and kids as well. Although the location is a bit difficult to reach. We drive to the ropeway station.

Wonderful winter this December 2016. Fantastic cable car ride to the top of Shinhotaka ropeway where the temperature is -9 degree C this time. There is a cafe at the mid-station serves curry rice with Hida beef- fabulous. Hotel Hotaka resort is located near the entrance of the ropeway. Easy access to this place from Takayama station by Nohi bus.

When we went there it was minus 16 degree. The snow kept falling all day long. But still it's very enjoyable to ride on the rope way. The view from the rope way just like what I see in posters or calendars, so beautiful. Too bad the snow is falling so hard so we cannot see the mountains so clearly.... More

We went to Shinhotaka Ropeway on a very cold day - hardly see anything in front of us on the observation deck. But we had a great experience anyway on the way up there on both gondolas. The food there was really amazing - we had a hot curry with noodle and the view from the dining area was amazing

We were rather excited to travel on the double gondola. However, the window panes were so dirty that it spoilt the photos. It actually disappointed us when the weather was so foggy on the day of our visit that we could not see the Alps at all. After spending so much time traveling to & fro, we felt we had... More

It takes almost 2 hours to get there from Takayama bus center but totally worth it. We visited in the winter so the snow was all over the mountain, the view was very beautiful. Prepare for very cold weather if you want to take a lot of photo (it was -13c when we were there)

The top of the mountain is great, it have a snow maze and you can walk around and explore. The food in the tram station is fair as all of them a prepacked food and only reheat after purchase. Recommend to take 1-2 hours to visit. The 2 decks tram ran from the 2nd station to the top. It could... More
