Really enjoyable morning on amazingly easy-to-ride bikes! Got right into the countryside and saw the beauty of rural Japan. Learned about the delicate local eco system from our guide, Dai. If you like cycling and the countryside, this tour is for you.

Dear Steve, Thanks for your kindness to write the great review on our half day e-bike ride. We had a really good time to see the beauty of nature in the rural part of Japan. I am also honored to be a tour guide in your memorable Japan trip. Hope you will be back to Japan one day in the future. Warm Regards, Daisuke

This tour was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our two weeks in Japan. We were staying in Takayama so the day started with a 35 minute train ride to the starting point of the tour where we met our guide for the day - Dai - were introduced to the well maintained e-bikes, issued with our safety helmets and we were off!

The bikes certainly do the heavy work and make the steep hills a breeze so don’t be put off. The route offers an eclectic mix of sights & experiences from the stunning views, small temples / shrines, fish farms and tasting local produce. A highlight for our family was the opportunity to swim in the crystal clear river waters which was the final stop of the tour.

Dai is an engaging, enthusiastic and informative guide who struck the right balance between giving us information and answering our questions on a variety of questions on Japanese life mostly unrelated to the tour! Some tips:

(1) if you’re travelling from Takayama on the 8:00 am train make sure you buy Express train tickets not the Local train.

(2) While it’s not hard work you’ll get thirsty out in the sun so you’ll need to stay hydrated. We probably drank a litre of water each over the day. You don’t have to carry it all though as there are several opportunities to buy from vending machines. Remember to buy it when you see it.

(3) It’s nice and cool cycling through the shaded sections but the sun is still coming through so remember to keep reapplying the sun cream!

(4) There are several toilets along the route.

Finally thank you so much to Dai for an amazing day and we wish you the best of luck building your business.

Dear Lane Family, Thank you so much for joining the rural bike tour and writing a marvelous review on that. We had a really good day in the unspoiled beautiful valley village. As you mentioned, I know the highlight of tour for you was the crystal river. Especially, you really enjoyed swimming there. Honestly, the village itself is a hidden part of Takayama region and the river beach is absolutely secret one! I always look forward to seeing a reaction of guests. You were super amazed, which made me happy too! Appreciate your kindness to leave some tips for future customers to join this tour. All of your information will be helpful for them. I was so honored to take your family to the peaceful village I am currently living in. Hope you will have a chance to come back to Japan and the pristine river. Thank you so much, and see you again! Warm Regards, Daisuke

Daisuke is an amazing guide who is truly passionate about sharing the story of rural Japan with tourists. We spent 7 hours with him on his new e-bikes through a beautiful 1000-person village with no tourists (and few people in general) in sight. Along the way, we stopped and spoke to locals, who invited us into their homes, served some coffee, and showed us a fish farm. We also had a traditional meal made of fresh local produce.

Can’t recommend this tour enough - it’s unlike any other tourist activity we did on our trip. Do it now before Daisuke’s business inevitably gets super huge and spots get harder to book!!

Dear Eric, Thanks for your time to visit us and write the great review on the rural bike trip. I also enjoyed the day with you and your family. It was a really beautiful day with nice sunlight and mountain breeze. You surprisingly did cycling in a whole day with no e-assist though the uphill to the village was not normal. Proud of your work but also glad to hear that you enjoyed the beautiful mountain views, local chats and the meal. We keep expanding the business, probably we will have made some other unique countryside experience until you come back to Japan with another family members. Thank you so much again! Warm Regards, Daisuke

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. A chance to get away from the beaten path while getting active. The ebikes were perfect - we were able to negotiate some hills with ease. The tour lead us around the Maze village area, with stops to chat with locals, a shrine, panoramic vistas, an awesome lunch spread, coffee by the river, and insights from a former Tokyo-resident-turned-local-guide Dai :)

Dear Vikram, Thank you so much for joining in the cycling trip and writing a great review on the experience. I am happy to see how you loved the day and the village in your comment. We had a feast in the local restaurant. You will never forget the beautiful presentation and taste. The local talking made the tour special too. It was really nice meeting you. Hope you will visit Japan again to explore it more. See you again! Warm Regards, Daisuke

My daughter and I met Daisuke and a customer by chance at the train station as it was a last minute trip and we joined them. We began by a visit of a shrine, then the brewery. I have already visited a brewery but the highlight here was the detailed explanation of the different versions of sake. I can now drink knowledgeably ! And Daisuke is a passionate and friendly ambassador for this art. Patrick (Tahiti).

Dear Patrick, Thank you so much for such a great comment about our sake experience. Literally, it was a lucky coincidence to meet you, and a wonderful day as well. Nice talking with you. There are hundreds or thousands sake breweries in Japan but the one we visited is extraordinary with no exaggeration. They are always welcoming and open for any visitors to show their factory. Besides, they offered you a lot of different kinds of sake for tasting. Hope you like Japanese sake much more and taste it in your home too. See you again, we will always welcome you coming back here. Warm Regards, Daisuke

I wrote on travel for the Huffington Post for 5 years, and of the 100 countries I've visited, this tour stands out. First of all, you're a genius for choosing this off-the-beaten-path part of Japan, and secondly Dai is a genius for the quality of service he gives. My highlight was hearing a fabulous Shamisen player (traditional Japanese guitar) at our lunch spot, and drinking in the fabulous aesthetic of an unspoiled country community that feels lost in time. Highly recommended.

Dear David, Thanks for joining in the e-bike tour and great honor to get the review from the Huffington Post travel writer. You were very lucky to hear the Shamisen but afterward the lady told me that she was also pleased to play it for you. We are customizing a new tour to enjoy the traditional Japanese music. Hope to see you again! Warm Regards, Dai

Short review: a brilliant experience, and an opportunity to escape the throngs of tourists.

Longer review: Dai was an excellent host, who provided our small group of six with an "off-the-beaten-path" unforgettable tour of the Hida country-side. He provides local insights at various stops along the shrines and scenic areas, so you get an authentic feel and understanding of the area. The scenery is stunning, ranging from mountains, rice paddies, and finally a hidden beach. We stopped for lunch, which was a traditional bento box with an excellent spread of local ingredients. They even catered to my partner and I who are vegetarians — amazing hospitality. Dai has a real source of pride in the area where he lives, and you will understand this as he shows you around.

The bikes are well maintained and efficient, and no need to worry about going on a epic mountain trek — the e-bikes make it easy for moderate level cyclists to navigate the hills. The trip goes from early morning until 3pm — a nice length of time to take in the surroundings.

Highly recommend this experience to any traveller, especially those who want to escape the usual tourist activities.

Dear Marcus, Thank you so much for writing a wonderful review about the full day e-bike experience in the non-touristy part of Japan. As you mention, this tour must be a great opportunity to stay away from tourist crowds and do some kind of different experience that we could never have in tourist places. I am so glad to hear that you loved the story about history, lifestyle and myself. As you felt during the tour, I am also really proud of the village, especially people living here because of their generosity so I cannot help but trying to contribute to them somehow. I believe this kind of mindset makes this tour more special and extraordinary. It was really nice meeting you. I will never forget it. Hope you will come back to the village to see me and the stunning Maze River. Warm Regards, Dai

We took the half day trip. It takes around 3.5 hours and we covered just over 23km. To get to Maze, you do need to go over a mountain, but it is not as daunting as it sounds. They provide you with bikes which have electric motors and assist you when you are going uphill. Once you are used to the bike, it makes it quite easy. So, no matter your age or your fitness levels, it’s a fun ride. The guide is Dai-san and he will lead you through some stunning countryside and into a small village called Maze where he now lives. To actually get there you have to go through a 1km tunnel and after that done the hill into Village, where time seems to stand still. The local people are very friendly and nice and welcoming. The advertising is right - there are no tourists, unlike Takayama. If you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle of tourism in Takayama, this is definitely the place to go. Dai-san is very friendly, extremely proud of the village, the people and the surrounding countryside with some nice information to share. There is also a nice surprise towards the end, which is nice, relaxing and ends the tour very nicely.

Dear Terry, Thanks for writing a very detailed review and I can truly understand how much you liked the experience. It was a really lovely day. I also had a great time with your family. The e-bike we use is splendid as always. I did a whole tour on the day without any assistance but it is hard actually. Now, I turn to understand how helpful it is. As you mention, we are surely proud of the village, not only just a beautiful nature but also local people living there. I am really glad to hear that you felt it. Also, still our village is totally far from touristy places like Takayama or Kyoto. It must be the best place to visit if people want to see the actual life in the countryside of Japan or escape from big cities like me. I know you are still living in Japan so you will have a chance to come back to the village, maybe next time you can catch or taste the very unique Ayu fish. We will be always expecting you. Thanks again for sharing your memory with us. Warm Regards, Dai

I loved all the bike ride.. Dai was a brilliant guide and full of knowledge. The scenery was so pretty. We even stopped by the river to have a cup of tea. I never thought we would get up the steep slopes but the ebikes were amazing. So much so that we are buying ebikes of our own!

Dear Sarah, Thank you so much for sharing your memory to bike around one of the most beautiful parts of Japan. I also enjoyed the tour especially seeing beautiful autumn leaves. The e-bikes are surely amazing. I ride it almost every day but I still cannot believe the assist power to climb up hill so easily. Nice to hear that you buy one for you. You may already know that Japan has a lot of places to see. Once the pandemic settles down, please visit Japan again and have another wonderful time. Warm Regards, Dai

Our bike tour with Dai-san was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. It was simply outstanding! Beautiful terrain, easy riding, very informative and had the best rice I've had in my life...which came from right there in the Hida Valley.

Our day started and ended with a beautiful train ride to and from Takayama. The bike tour itself took us through a beautiful village, then up and over into the incredible Hida Valley. It's so beautiful it doesn't seem real. Dai-san arranged lunch for us at a local restaurant which was incredible. All traditional Japanese food with all of the ingredient local from the valley.

On our next trip to Japan we will do this again...and you should do it too!

Dear Dave, Thanks for coming and writing a great review about the full day e-bike ride in the rural village around Takayama. Great to hear that you loved the scenery and local food, especially rice. I am a local person but it must be special for strangers and first-time travelers to cycle through the valley. So proud of beautiful nature preserved by locals. Definitely, I am a lucky guy to show them to wonderful guests like you. It might take some time until we can travel abroad but surely it will come. Hope you will visit us again to taste local rice again! Warm Regards, Dai
