After reading about this library, i stopped in Gifu on my way elswhere to visit it. The outside is just an ordinary building but the interior is stunning. The pictures really don`t do it justice, The high ceilings of wood patterns with the giant canopies marking the various functional areas were beautiful. Low shelving with labeling in Japanese, English and images, study areas, rooms for listening, what looked like a storytime room in the childrens area and windows bringing in light from every wall all made for an inviting space. There was also a coffeeshop and convenience store area downstairs. The Rem Koolhaas designed library in Seattle seems quite sad in comparison.

The First thing that hits your nostrils once the automatic door opens...the " sweet" aromatic smell of wood. I'm not sure if it's Japanese " hinoki" wood or " Sakura"(Cherry blossoms) either way, the smell is really relaxing, though my 8 yr old son only wants to " raise hell" in the library,, the concept of " be quiet " is foreign to an energetic 8yr old boy!
Besides that, this library is a healthy 8minutes walk from our apartment!,
So, I'm trying to get our son to forgo the PSP3 & read a book!
Anyway, I'm rambling..back on topic...the reading " dome" reminds me of " under dome" but without the drama
Recommended to the finicky library enthusiast...we TRY going every other Sunday ....Family " Quiet" Day...

We love architecture and libraries so this was a great stop during our stay. We don’t speak Japanese so couldn’t really interact but it was wonderful to see locals enjoy the space. A well worth stop!

Media Cosmos is an activity center near the former prefectural building. There is a public library, a coffee shop, a convenient store and so on. The architecture of this building is unique and worth taking a look.

We want to visit here as this is one of the Toyo Ito’s latest work. It’s amazing when step in. It’s contemporary and yet many Japanese element are adopted. People in Gifu should be proud and happy to own such nice place.

Although the facility is based on the library in Gifu City, it is advanced not to be able to think that the exterior and interior of the building are library! The existing library is located in the center of the facility and it is surrounded by glass walls. The surroundings of the library are multipurpose space, there are various exhibitions, study studios, Starbucks and convenience stores. I think that not only Gifu citizens but also tourists can use the facilities interestingly.
The disadvantages are that on of them is a bit fat from Gifu station, another is that there is a possibility of disturbing concentration to study, because the children's voices echo in the open space. The facility is so large, if you want to use it quietly, you may need to find your comfortable place.

I've always wanted to visit here ever since I knew the place is open last year. I finally came here and tried to stay for a couple of hours reading a book. It was such a great experience and I really loved the frames and structure of the ceiling. When visiting this place, I recommend you to stay for a few hours and enjoy reading a book or something.
