This is surprisingly badly sign-posted but well worth going. It's one of the three great Buddha statues in Japan, but unlike the other two, it's made from papier mache and took 38 years to make. It's in a very modest looking temple - from the outside, you wouldn't know something so beautiful was inside. But when you get in, and... More

黄檗宗の正法寺との大仏 "Great Buddha of Gifu, Batman!" The head priest of Shōhōji, Ichū, concieved of this Great Buddha and it was completed in 1832 after 38 years of construction and long after Ichū had passed away. It was constructed with a central pillar made from a gingko tree, and then a bamboo frame was made in the shape of the statue,... More

This is one of the three seated Daibutsu in Japan (Nara and Kamakura being the other two). He is made of paper mache with a bamboo structure and gold leaf on the top and is 13.6m tall. I was the only person in the temple so felt very honoured as it was incredibly peaceful and calming. It cost Y200 to... More

I think it's one of the biggest budas in Japan with 13 meters. 200 yens to come in the temple, just the buda. Nothing special to be honest.

Very old, evoking a feeling of looking at history. The staff were very friendly, assisting us with our tour of the sight.

I loved the story behind the Great Buddha in Gifu. So many of Japan's finest attractions are replicas from days gone by, but the Great Buddha has stood the test of time and continues to watch over the city nearly 200 years later. I almost skipped this as I've been previously to visit large Buddhas in Lantau, but was very... More

The golden Great Buddha is truly great in size and appearance. Almost just as striking are the numerous intricately carved figures that surround the room--each with its own distinctive face.

This is a great part of a very enjoyable walking tour/day tour of Gifu City. The history of the devoted monk who initiated its construction is humbling.

Great Buddha - worth the trip from Tokyo, but a hile from the station - do ask for a bus. The people at the station are very helpful.

This delicate gold colored Buddha stature sit quietly in the temple near Gifu park. It is highly recommended to visit if you are in Gifu city. Unlike the other great Buddhas, a quite moment is promised here.
