Best experienced in tandem with the Rainbow Line drive
Feb 2020
The weather was bad as I visited in February. However, the extreme weather only made the foot bath at the summit park much more enjoyable, as well as a little snack at the cafe as well. Views are magnificent all around and it is best enjoyed with a full and shining sun.

Nice scenic drive along the rainbow line
Nov 2019 • Family
Mikata five lakes was a last minute insertion to our trip. We were deciding to stop by Mikatagoko or Lake Biwa after Fukui. Glad we chose this. The short drive along the Rainbow line was scenic. We could stop at the parking spots for some photos. The entrance fee for a car cost about 1000yen. But we got in for about 700yen. Not sure if its due to season. To get here, point your GPS to Mikatagoko rainbow line. You will be led to the entrance. From there it is an easy drive along. There is a souvenir shop and rest area at the top parking lot. We did not visit the observatory as there is an entrance fee of about 1000yen per adult (includes a ride up). We visited Otori restaurant for lunch, which is a 10min drive - depending on the gate you exit from.

Breathtaking!
Aug 2013
Extremely beautiful spot near Tsuruga, Fukui prefecture. Best time to visit is around 4 and 5 in the evening as to catch the sunset and enjoy the view of the rocks and water in the best lights. Highly recommended to go by car! The Rainbow line (road that connects two sides of the appendix) is worth driving!

Stop and smell the roses
Nov 2011 • Friends
Take a two minute ride to the top of the mountain by chair lift and enjoy the scenic view. See the five lakes and purchase a pledge lock and attach it to one of the many chains. Don't forget to stop and smell the roses.
